Garrett kisses and holds him, but there's still a strange, sharp undercurrent of hurt in it. When Dodger pressed his teary face into his chest, a small laugh booms out.

"Has anyone ever told you how confusing you are?"

Dodger nods slowly, hesitantly looking back up and studying Garrett's face.

"Yeah. I get that a lot."

There's a little more hesitation, and one of his hands slides down to seek out Garrett's hand, to lace their fingers together.

"I don't know what I'm doing. All of this is.. new."

Garrett clasps his dripping-wet hand with Dodger's and looks down at Dodger's teary face. It seems to mirror the turbulence in him.

"It can't be that new, if I really am the same as the others."

"That's not what I said."

Dodger squeezes Garrett's hand gently. Funny how he's drawing comfort from the same man who's making him need it.

"Garrett, you know I'm not a good person. I hurt people I love, I get bored of them, I kill them. I don't know how to control myself and people pay for that. And I'm not gonna sit here and promise that's not gonna happen."

He leans back a bit, just so he can meet Garrett's eyes at a slightly more even level.

"I don't know how you're different, you just are. You feel different."

Garrett's frown deepens the longer Dodger talks. Yes, he knows what kind of person Dodger is. He's been hurt many times before. Somehow the warnings are starting to roll off his back- it reminds him a little of how Anders used to proclaim doom to the rafters every time they were alone, talking about what a monster he was and how he would ruin everything.

Of course, that turned out to be true. Sort of.

It leaves him feeling weird and unsettled, and he isn't sure how to respond.

"Well, I'm glad I'm the only fuck-dad in your life," he jokes unfunnily. "It would be alarming if I felt exactly the same."

Dodger frowns, and bites his lip as he tries to figure out how to patch this up. He's had fights with every partner he's ever had, he's had to soothe all sorts of wounds and pull them down from all sorts of metaphorical ledges. He still doesn't know how to do it properly.

"Can you come back to bed? Please?"

Garrett's eyes cast down to the floor for a moment before flicking back up to meet the other's. It's obvious that Dodger is trying. He's trying, and Garrett has a hard time resisting those eyes.

"Can you pet me and call me a good boy?"

He plays it off like a smartass remark.

The request pulls a small smirk onto Dodger's face. It might sound like a quip, but he knows Garrett really does like it.

"We both know you're a good boy." He reaches up to scritch behind Garrett's ear. "Come on, let's finish the movie."

Garrett nods and follows Dodger back into the bedroom. Once in bed, he arranges himself so he's very easy to pet, with his head on Dodger's chest. It's cozy, comforting, and safe. It also gives him easy access to the thin scattering of chest hair that he likes to toy with idly in his fingers while they cuddle, and soothes the sad loneliness in his heart.

"This is the part where you should say nice things about me," he says firmly, once more framing an emotional need like a quip. "Talk about feelings or tell me I'm pretty. Tell me how amazing I am. I did like that shining light stuff from before."

Dodger happily curls up around Garrett, running his fingers through his lover's hair and warming his skin to feel more comforting. He does want to make Garrett happy, to make this work. He just wishes he didn't need the instructions.

"Followed by the part where you make some dumbass remark to hide how you feel about it."

He takes a breath, melting contentedly into the magnolia and sandalwood, the blend of cinnamon and the undercurrent of Garrett.

"You're... gorgeous. I love that you don't back down from anything, you always want to try new things and push through to the end. I like that you... still trust me, after everything. I don't think I would've made it this long without you."

Garrett sighs contentedly at the touching, a purr rumbling deep in his chest. There's a safety and a kindness here that he never would have expected to find in this particular man's arms, but he certainly won't complain about having it.

And true to Dodger's words, he does have to fight the urge to hide or brush off how the affection makes him feel. Instead of a dumbass remark, though, he settles for a small sound of pleasure and burying his face in Dodger's chest to conceal a stupid smile.

"For the record, I don't know why I trust you," he says unnecessary. He's still playing with Dodger's chest hair, tracing patterns on his chest and drawing a finger lightly over the sun-shaped medallion. "But I know I wouldn't have survived last summer without you, and I know I'd be dead or in jail here."

"That's alright. I'm not trustworthy... But I'm trying to be. I told you before and I stand by it - I want to be someone worthy of you."

He really doesn't want to think about last summer. But it is true, that Garrett really needed him and Dodger had done his best to help.

He glances down, and covers Garrett's hand with his own, guiding it away from the medallion.

"I love you, y'know. Dumb jokes and all."

Garrett's eyes linger on the medallion. In trying to divert his attention away from the thing, Dodger has succeeded only in capturing it. He does look up at Dodger, though his mind still lingers.

"I love you too." Hesitation. "Can I show you something?"

Without waiting for an answer, Garrett sits up a little and takes the heavy copper star medallion around his neck. With a deft little bit of handiwork, he presses the middle in just so and manages to rotate something, coaxing it somehow to open- revealing the medallion to actually be a locket. From it a few things pour out into his hand- tiny little things that look like tiny little loops of thread or tufts of... hair?

Upon closer inspection - black, gray, salt-and-pepper - yes, they are hair. One is very short and black, another a little longer and black. One is salt-and-pepper, one gray, one blonde. There's a tiny little loop of gray-and-black curl and, last of all - something he handles with the utmost care - a tiny little tuft of brown. All the locks of hair are stuck together and preserved with what looks like resin, to keep them pristine and safe.

As he sets each one down, he names them: "Bethany, Carver, Father, Mother."

Which still leaves the blonde, the curl, and the brown.

Dodger sits up a bit to watch Garrett open the locket, and he tips his head as Garrett introduces the hair. Some part of him thinks it's a bit weird to keep hair in a necklace, but he can't complain, can he? He still has a box under his bed full of his mother's belongings.

"Leonard, Barry, and...?"

It feels a bit loaded to have named them. But he's studying Garrett's face more than the hair, silently wondering what's happening in the older man's mind.

"Anders."

Somehow, it doesn't bother him that Dodger knew what Leonard's hair looked like, or that Leonard existed at all. The stalking feels expected.

"Our roommate gave him a haircut two days before he disappeared from Zhautas, the first other-world I was in. I found this on the floor, and... after that, I took from Barry and Leonard when things were serious enough that I wanted a way to remember them if I ever lost them."

He glances up at Dodger, expression utterly inscrutable.

"They never even knew that it opens."

Dodger chews his lip for a moment, silently processing it for a bit. More than anything, what surprises him is that Garrett has done this without the other parties knowing. It seems too underhanded for him, but everyone is full of surprises.

"Don't put my hair in there." He speaks quietly, picking his words carefully. "I don't want you to fall apart the way you did for everyone else. If something happens to me, I-... I don't want you to fall apart again."

Garrett's brows crinkle in a disbelieving look, as if it's a ridiculous thing to say.

"You of all people should know- once someone is one of "my people," it never really stops." He starts to put the little locks of hair back one at a time, and quietly closes the locket again. It snaps back as if it never opened at all, leaving no trace it was ever anything more than a medallion. "Once I let someone in, that's it. When I love someone, it's sort of forever, in one way or another."

Dodger lets out a quiet, long-suffering sigh through his nose. He doesn't have an argument for that because yeah, he knows exactly how loyal Garrett is. Loyalty to the point of fault and pain.

"You're too good for me." He leans forward to press a kiss to Garrett's lips. "I'm serious, though. I don't want you to get hurt."

Garrett leans up to return it, quiet and sincere. When it's done, he stays close to enjoy the intimacy.

"Then don't hurt me," he says softly. It sounds deceptively simple, doesn't it?

There's a quiet hurt that slips into Dodger's eyes, at that seemingly simple statement. He doesn't seem to react, but the defeat rolls in like a wave. It would be so easy for someone else. It is the hardest thing anyone could ask of Dodger.

Rather than answer, he just kisses Garrett again. Soft at first, but underlined by a desperation that slowly threatens to take hold of him. A sincere need to get out of his own head.

Immediately, Garrett sees that he misstepped. It makes sense, of course- with who Dodger is as a person, of course he would feel beaten-down by such a simple statement. It might be a pure red flag, but there's also other things at play here, and Garrett can feel them coming through in the desperation of that kiss.

He lets it go on for a little while, though he determinedly keeps the pace slow and soft. When he thinks things are getting too much, he stops and gazes into those green eyes, taking Dodger's face in his massive hands.

"I'm not the only one dropping, am I? Talk to me. What we did messed you up a bit, didn't it? Even though we had fun?"

He struggles just a bit when Garrett stops their kkss, still seeking an escape before he submits to being pulled back into the conversation. There's a moment of hesitation, but there's no good reason to hide it. He nods.

"I've never gone that far with anyone. Not without killing them." In light of everything, it's a difficult statement to get out and his words stumble out awkwardly. "It was hot... I thought you'd back off sooner, I was ready to stop when you needed me to, and then..."

He chews his lip, his gaze faltering for a moment before he kisses Garrett for confidence.

"...I stopped thinking. About anything. I could have killed you. And I kept..." Another hesitation, "...I kept fading. It felt like if I didn't keep looking at you, I'd forget who I was."

Garrett keeps petting Dodger's cheek while the young man talks, taking in the sight of him and how shifty he clearly is. The first parts are all understandable, and none too surprising- that he'd never gone so far before, that he thought Garrett would stop, that it was still hot.

That he lost himself. Disturbing, perhaps, a little- but surprising? No. The last bit is the only part to give him pause.

"Don't you take medication for that?" he asks earnestly, thinking about the glowing blue pills in the bathroom. "They're supposed to anchor you here."

Dodger wilts a little at that, his gaze falling to the sheets even as he snuggles in closer.

"I forget them. Pretty often."

He should have taken them while they were in the bathroom, but he didn't. In any case, he isn't supposed to take them again until the morning. Maybe he should have just taken something for the headache.

"It's the blood. The excitement. I don't know." He shrugs awkwardly. "My head's just cracked and sometimes I just... can't control myself. I just want to rip things apart."

"Jamie," he chides softly, gently flicking Dodger on the nose. "You know better than that. Do we have to get one of those pill organizers again?"

Like they used in Stepford. Strange memories.

The rest... he just shrugs. Garrett understands, kind of. In a way. The way blood can take over a man's higher senses and wipe out thought, and how terrifyingly easy it can be to lose oneself in an animalistic frenzy. For him it's always associated with fighting, never sex, but he can definitely see how it would transfer, especially in someone so damaged as Dodger.

"I don't know, though." He sounds thoughtful. "Even towards the end, you backed off when I asked you to be gentler. I think if I had used the safeword, you would have stopped."
