He'd heard rumors of new mutants cropping up around the city, but that was nothing new. People come and go, and mutants always make ripples through the underground. Even if they'd been showing up without any proof of their own identities, that wasn't his business. And he preferred not to overextend himself if he didn't have to; he had enough of a headache trying to get his life back together after he'd apparently been spat back out of Hell.

None of it matters, that is, until he comes home at some odd hour to an apartment entirely full of dogs. Dogs that are infuriatingly familiar, and who all seem to remember him as well. He's immediately tense, even more so when he spots the stuffed duffel bag on the floor by his shoes, and he pushes several wet noses aside as he tries to wade through the snouts and wagging tails to investigate.

"Alright, where the fuck are you?" There isn't much warmth in his voice, but there might be... a little spark of something under the annoyance.

There's no sign of Garrett amidst the sea of dogs, but there is a pair of duffel bags, one smallish and one quite large. The big one seems relatively normal, with clothing, shoes, and grooming products that were until recently in Garrett's bathroom. There's also a bag of very familiar candy, some booze, a bag of weed, and a familiar pipe, as well as a decent stash of the various drugs unique to hell, some books of magical study, several bottles of aphro, and an astonishing amount of Viagra (with the same style of bottle and packaging as other drugs from Hell). And, of course, those familiar sleeping pills, enough to last at least eight months. The smaller duffel contains the contents of a box that Dodger has rummaged through on more than one occasion- apparently, the random whims of the multiverse saw fit to transport part of Garrett's collection of adult paraphernalia with him across dimensions. Because why the fuck not.

There's also a cell phone charger, but no cell phone, and an unfortunately familiar voodoo doll. In a pile in the corner, investigation will reveal several pieces of armor- but not a complete set.

It takes a while to get the dogs to give him enough space that he can investigate, but finally he lets out a burst of heat and they scatter backward. After a pause, Crusher loops around and herds them into the bedroom so they can keep playing while he checks the bags.

Not many clues, except the mountains of evidence that this is his Garrett, and that whatever forces brought him here apparently expect Dodger to babysit him. How long has it been - weeks? Almost a month now. The clothes in the larger bag smell exactly like him, and Dodger can't help grabbing a shirt out and pressing it to his face, taking a few deep breaths that clear his head and fill it to the brim at the same time.

His phone buzzes. It knocks him out of his thoughts enough to check, and of course it's a message from Scry. He's one of the two people who ever texts him lately, and he almost misses having more people to talk to.

SCRY: You're looking for a man with horns and half a set of armor.
DODGER: sure.
SCRY: He just came into my clinic. You were going to ask me by tomorrow, but I figured I'd speed things along.
DODGER: he alive?
SCRY: He wouldn't be here if he wasn't.
SCRY: Should I ask who he is?
DODGER: doesnt matter. ill be there in a few minutes.
SCRY: What a surprise.

It's a fair distance to teleport even at full power, and by the time he reaches the clinic his path has become a little unreliable. When he enters Garrett's hospital room he crashes into the counter, and steadies himself for a second before slumping into the desk chair beside it. For now he doesn't say anything, just trying to gauge the man's condition.

Garrett is in fairly rough shape- some broken ribs, bandages on his head, arm in a cast. The doctors said something about a head injury, and he believes it, just from how weird and out of it he's felt. Everything feels slow and off-balance and there's an intense pain radiating from his head that's even worse than the general pains in the rest of his body.

There's a one-second delay after the sudden cacophony, as Garrett's reactions fire up slowly. He looks around at the noise, wincing as his head spins and putting his good hand to an unbandaged part of his head with a slow hiss. Fuck, that- fuck, his head hurts and what the fuck was that. He looks more carefully with the deliberate motions of a drunkard trying to pass as sober.

Oh. That... isn't what he expected. He didn't really expect anything, but that isn't what he expected. He looks up at the last man he ever expected (or wanted) to see again, eyes a little unfocused, pupils different sizes as he blinks stupidly.

"Am I hallu- hal. Seeing shit?"

"Nice to see you too."

Fuck, Garrett looks like shit. Dodger's expression is mostly blank, but Garrett knows him well enough to see that furrow in his brow and know he's worried. He still needs a moment to catch his breath, but he watches the older man, running a hand through his hair just to get it off his forehead for a second.

"Welcome to Boston. You're in my world." His gaze darts over the injuries, and his eyes narrow slightly, "Did you get hit by a car?"

The question takes a moment to reach him, then another (longer) moment to process. He blinks slowly, brows furrowing slightly until his head nods in answer.

"I had never seen one in person before," he informs the other man, settling a little more heavily into his pillows. "They aren't as good at stopping as horses."

Dodger lets out an amused little chuff, before sinking further into the chair.

"Yeah. That's why you stay out of the road."

He takes a deep breath, and groans as he pushes himself up to his feet. He walks over slowly, sitting on the edge of the bed and leaning down to press a kiss to Garrett's forehead.

"Medicine's pretty advanced these days, so you won't be here that long. Is your magic working?"

Garrett takes the kiss with a slightly squinched-up face and a small sound.

"I don't know." Can't know. "Didn't know if it was safe to try in public."

His head lolls on the pillows a little in Dodger's general direction. The real weight of Dodger's presence and the significance of being stuck in his world haven't begun to reach him. All his addled brain knows is that this is someone he knows, a beacon of familiarity calling to him through the fog of yet another strange new world.

"Now my head's all heavy. I don't think I can."

"That's fine." Dodger's voice softens a bit, and he runs his fingers through Garrett's hair. "Scry's got folks with healing powers on staff. They'll fix you up."

For a while he's quiet, just wrapping his head around what this really means. That Garrett is in his world, that he's tied to someone he cares about in a space where they could get hurt. Death will stick here, and there are people who could harm the man to get to Dodger.

But more importantly than that, he gets to see Garrett again. And that trumps any anxiety he might have. With a soft huff he presses his head against Garrett's chest gingerly, breathing in the scent of his skin and his blood.

"It's good to see you again."

Dodger's fingers in his hair feel good, but the pressure on his chest draws a soft hiss of pain that lances sharp inside him.

"Ribs," he murmurs. "Everything hurts."

"Right."

Dodger lifts his head back up, studying Garrett's face and playing with his hair. His fingers stray down to the man's beard, tracing the line of his jaw and pressing his thumb to Garrett's bottom lip before pulling back.

"I'm gonna need to find you somewhere to live... I'm not keeping all of your dogs at my place."

He pulls out his phone, and starts to text someone while he talks.

"That'll take some strings getting pulled, but I'll sort it out. Usually wouldn't take too long, but finding a place that'll take that many dogs is gonna be a trip." A glance at Garrett. "You can pay me back to this later."

"Okay." Garrett nods dreamily while wheels slowly turn in his wounded head. Dogs. Too many dogs for a city place, isn't it? A lot of dogs. The buildings out there- the places can't be big, they looked like the hotel so people's homes can't be very big. Nowhere to run around.

"It's too many dogs for the city," he notes, brows drawing together in a slow-motion frown. "On TV, city apartments are always small. Are they small in real life? Or is it like everyone being sexy and waking up with makeup on?"

Dodger cracks a smile at that, and lets out another amused chuff.

"They're smaller than they look on TV. But money's no issue, I can get you some room to breathe."

There's a knock on the door, and Dodger teleports backward to lean on the wall and look like he doesn't care about the situation at hand. He's very cool and emotionless he swears. After a moment a nurse comes in, and pauses when she sees Dodger before just moving past him to sit beside Garrett. "Hi Garrett. I just need to take a look at your head and see what I can do about it. How are you feeling?"

Dodger obviously doesn't know how to stand while she's working, so he just sort of stays where he is and shoves his hands in his pockets.

Garrett gives an answer somewhere in the realm of "Like a very heavy cloud. Or a drunk. My brain is seasick."

While she works, he lies there placidly, somewhat less chill about pain than he normally is. The cause becomes quite clear when he blurrily asks, "Can I have more of the- stuff?"

Morphine? She's very patient. It reminds Garrett of a woman he knew in Lothering. No mage, but knew herbs and remedies like no other. Only a little. We don't want you getting sick.

"Dodger said you have healing." Or something? He's not entirely sure. "Does someone have healing? I can't do it myself when my head is fucked."

"I can heal you a little bit, but my powers are sort of limited." She puts her fingers on his forehead, and a bit of glowing light pulses around his temples while she clears up his concussion. It doesn't really help with the rest of his body, but his head should feel less swimmy.

She glances at Dodger. "Dr. Scry asked for you to see him, Dodger."

"I'll talk to him when I'm done here."

"Is this a friend of yours?"

"Nah, he's not running with me. Not yet."

She purses her lips, but doesn't say anything to that.

Garrett sighs happily as she melts away the nausea and at least some of the pain with a stoned thanks. His head is a little less swimmy- the concussion is gone but the traces of morphine remain, making for less pain but not dooing much for his brain-to-mouth filter.

"No, we're not friends," he says, the beginnings of a drugged-up giggle tugging at the corners of his lips. "He's actually my-"

"-Thanks. For your help, Diane." Dodger interrupts loudly. "Think you could give us some space to talk for a sec?"

She raises her brows at him. "You know you don't run this place, right?"

"Yeah, sure. But fuck off for a bit."

She rolls her eyes, but gets up. "Garrett, there's a button right here on the side of the bed. Press it if you need someone to come for you."

"I'll make sure he stays alive."

Dodger stays put until she leaves, and then moves closer to Garrett and hisses, "Keep your mouth shut around civs."

Garrett thanks her for the button, then thanks her again as she walks out, a vacant little almost-smile still on his face when Dodger starts saying something to him. All he catches is the last part, which doesn't even make sense.

"What's a civ? Like sieve? Are we filtering them?"

"Civilian. Y'know, non-military, uninvolved in war. God, you're stupid."

He steals the nurse's chair, and sinks into it while pulling out a cigarette to smoke. A text interrupts him, and he grumbles at it before putting his pack away. Scry is bothering him again not to smoke in the clinic.

"Just don't talk to anyone, let me handle shit. This isn't like Hell, okay, I've got a reputation and I'd like to keep it straight."

Garrett doesn't argue that last part. Yeah, this place obviously isn't like Hell. It has cars and no welcoming committee and is so much bigger than Hell ever was, even just the little part of the city he's seen. But something does bug him enough to snark about it, even while stoned off his gourd.

"I'm not stupid. They don't call them civilians back home." Garrett lifts his non-broken arm to his hair, messing it gracelessly. "You wouldn't last five minutes in Kirkwall."

Dodger cocks his head, considering that with a vague shrug.

"Don't doubt it. But I'd probably last longer than you will here without my help. If you fuck with the wrong person, they could kill you without lifting a finger."

A rare case, seeing as Dodger is one of the more powerful mutants in the city, but not impossible. There are definitely forces he's learned not to mess with.

Garrett drifts a little, taking in maybe two thirds of what Dodger says. Enough to sleepily remark, "Your world's another shitty one, isn't it?"

Again he smiles, and a rough chuckle escapes him as he nods, "Yeah, it is. No asshole God this time, at least."

He's silent for a while before standing up. "I'll come pick you up when you get released, shouldn't be more than a few days. Do you have a phone?"

"Right there." Garrett sort of waves at the corner, where his pieces of armor and sword are leaned against the wall. On the little table next to them is a phone.

It's different from the other places." His brows furrow with faint worry. "It's a lot more complicated and there's nobody in it."

No database of other users with a single easily accessed network. None of those hallmarks of every otherworld he's been to before.

"Yeah, this ain't a pocket dimension. This is a real world."

He wanders over to grab Garrett's phone and starts messing with it, giving a sidelong glance to the sword and armor.

"I'll put my number in, and Scry's if you want. He runs the hospital here, best one for us to go without getting mistreated - they don't ask too many questions here, either." There's a pause. "He's my uncle. So he treats me good."

That's something that he wouldn't admit to anyone else, but... Garrett knows much more dangerous secrets about him. There's no point in hiding his relation to Scry.
