"I always look good." Dodger purrs, raising their hands up so he can press his lips to her knuckles.

He pulls away to sip his whiskey, but his attention feels magnetically drawn back to Garrett. Especially when she drinks, he seems enraptured by the sight. He's always much more attentive when Garrett is eating or drinking, unable to look away from it.

That fancy appetizer she wanted is slid onto the table, and the waiter is quick to give them room again. Dodger largely ignores it, content to keep focusing on Garrett.

"I've been thinking about the carnival. About how happy you were letting demons grope at you. Letting me pass you around." A pause, to let Garrett's imagination run wild for a moment. "There's a bar near here where a couple of my friends like to meet up - could be fun to let them meet you after we're done here, see what they think."

Garrett picks up an oyster and tries it, pleasantly surprised at the briny taste and exquisite texture. She's heard that these things are aphrodisiacs, so it goes well with the images Dodger spins for her to think on. Hands running over her skin, unseen demons groping him when he was blind, bound, and too drugged to defend himself. The way he had trembled with the effort of obediently keeping still when Dodger ordered him to let the demons touch him. Fuck, she feels warm.

Then Dodger makes a proposition that has the faint heat tightening into a ball of low tension between her legs, like a very distant ache. It takes Garrett a moment to think past the image of being passed around like a whore to process the man's actual words- but when she does, she frowns.

"I haven't even met your friends yet," she points out, meeting Dodger's eyes doubtfully. "Why is it suddenly a good time now?"

Dodger's hand slips away from Garrett's, down to slide across her inner thigh. Even while she's questioning him, she looks adorable and he seems totally unaffected.

"Does it matter?" He shrugs, "It's good practice for you. See how well you can pass as Marian, before you meet the boss."

And it's definitely just that. Not that he's been getting off on the idea of letting his friends use her, that he and Palo have definitely joked about fucking a girl together.

Yes, she definitely notices the hand on her thigh, and has to take a drink of wine to distract herself from visibly reacting. Despite Dodger's determination to turn this filthy, she's equally set on not getting deterred from her point.

"That's all well and good, and I like the kinky idea, but I want to meet them as Garrett."

"And I don't." He answers, with that tone of harsh finality.

His hand stays on her thigh, and warms with a gentle warning. A slight hint of claws.

She feels the heat and the claws. She doesn't care.

"You're ashamed of having a boyfriend," she accuses, voice tinged with hurt. "Aren't you?"

Dodger pauses, not looking at her and reaching to finish his whiskey. His claws curl around the glass, and he sets his jaw with frustration.

"I don't want you towering over me. I told you, my image is important to me. That doubles when I'm around my men."

That answer is so unexpected that for a moment, she's just silent. Of all the things she thought Dodger might say, her height was nowhere on the list. It's not something she's ever been made to feel lesser for, or embarrassed of. It's a very strange feeling, but sharp with the understanding that-

"So it's not having a boyfriend you're ashamed of, it's just me," she says dourly. "I'm so sorry to embarrass you."

Garrett puts her oyster down and takes a long drink of wine.

Dodger finally pulls his hand away, and hunches over the table. Still playing with the glass in his hands, not looking at Garrett.

"It's complicated." He finally answers. "You being here complicates things. That doesn't mean I don't want you around - I just need to think about how being with you makes me look."

He should have gotten her more drunk before they had this conversation. Drunk enough not to think about being objectified and used. Maybe drunk enough not to know where she was in the first place.

It's been over a year, but the thought that comes to her unbidden is Barry wouldn't do this. She knows enough to not say it, but it still festers hot and hateful in her heart, eating away where her hurt lies.

"Let's make it simple." Her voice has a familiar tone, though higher than normal, of Garrett on the hairy edge of saying or doing something stupid. It's the tone of anxiety and mental illness that she's been trying to drive from her voice lately, with every workout and ray of sunshine and text with Coyote about jobs. She really has been trying, but sometimes the cracks show. "If you promise that I can meet them some time next week, as myself and your boyfriend, then we can go back to having a nice time. You can even pick up that dirty talk you were starting on; I sort of wanted to hear where it was going."

There's a but. An other half to this, an if not. But she'd rather not drop the ultimatum without giving Dodger a chance to just... be a person about it.

Dodger's brow furrows, and his hand clenches on the glass. His mind is racing, passing through every possible outcome of this conversation - not just that, the outcomes of showing Garrett off to his friends and allies. Having people know who he's associating with, publicly. Giving Garrett a target over his head for anyone who takes issue with Dodger.

The glass shatters in his hand, and he growls as his blood seeps onto the table.

"Drop it or get out." He snarls, finally looking up with eyes that have turned entirely black. "And don't bother coming home."

Somehow, she didn't expect Dodger to jump straight to kicking her out. It's a punch to the gut that has her shoulders dropping even as she instinctively reaches out to heal him, keeping her magic tiny and dim and just in the cuts on his hand.

"I didn't know you were that ashamed of me," she says quietly. "Dodger, I don't want to be someone's dirty little secret. Can't you understand that?"

"You're not." He snaps at her, still quiet in case anyone overhears it. "I told you it's complicated. I can't rearrange everything just to accomodate you, every fucking time I make a compromise you find some way to tell me it's not enough. You mope all fucking day while I'm busting my ass to find some level of normalcy."

He tightens his hand, driving the leftover bits of glass in almost to spite her for healing him.

"I found you an apartment, I put up with all your fucking dogs, I changed my locks for you, and you keep wanting more. Fuck me for wanting to keep my private life away from other people, right?"

She reaches out with her other hand to catch his hand in hers, slipping her fingers in coaxingly to try and get him to unclench. If that's successful, she means to slip more healing in, until Dodger's body naturally forces those shards of glass out. If he doesn't let her, then she'll just stroke his bloodied fingers in an almost nervous gesture.

"But you'll share your private life if I'm just a big-breasted sex doll? Not if I'm a real person. I'm sorry, I know I need to get a job and help, but..."

But it's hard. Near impossible.

"The best idea I had didn't sound like something you'd be a fan of."

He hesitates, but he lets her take his hand. His jaw clenches, and it takes some effort to relax his hand so that she can heal him.

In the middle of all this tension, a waiter slides their steaks onto the table in front of them, and asks Dodger if he wants a new glass of whiskey. He nods, and asks for the full bottle.

"You in this form isn't my private life. It's eye candy. It's a way to keep you around without other people knowing who you are and trust me, that's safer for both of us."

Garrett softens a little as it becomes clear that Dodger's hesitation isn't derived entirely from shame, but from fear. Concern. She heals his hand, quietly and without fanfare, concentrating all her effort on keeping the light tiny and dim and cupped between their hands where no one can see.

"I'm not a stranger to being vulnerable or having a target on my back. If you're afraid of what might happen to me, then teach me how to take care of myself here. Or point me in the direction of learning it myself."

"I can keep you safe if you just trust me." He interrupts her, his eyes returning to green as he gives her an almost pleading look. "I know this world, I know how the city works. All you have to do is follow what I tell you, and keep your head down."

He shifts his weight, enough to lean forward and seek out a kiss. Whether or not he's allowed it, he just leans back and pulls his hand away after.

"Eat your food."

Garrett allows Dodger that kiss, but it's a touch reluctant. There are still things unresolved here, and she doesn't want to let it drop. At the same time, she really was enjoying the night, and doesn't necessarily want to ruin everything, either .

She picks up an oyster and holds it out to him, clearly aiming to feed it to him rather than hand it over.

"You know, these are supposed to be aphrodisiacs."

The reluctance in that kiss eats at Dodger a little, but he says nothing. He accepts the oyster readily, letting her feed him and licking his lips as a bit of the juice escapes into his beard.

"So I've heard." He leans closer again, somewhat hoping they can reclaim the atmosphere they had before the fight. "Not that I need any aphrodisiacs with you around."

He takes her hand again, rubbing his thumb comfortingly along it.

"We don't need them, but they are fun." Garrett smiles a little at the compliment and finishes her glass of wine, pouring herself a new glass with one hand.

After a sip she hands him another oyster, then leans a little closer with an expectant look on her face. Feed her, Dodger. Feeding him had a certain intimacy to it, a sensuality, and she is just as hopeful as him that maybe they can just... forget their troubles for a little while.

Dodger lets her feed him again, and cuts a piece of steak to press against her lips. It is nice, the way that they can settle and try to forget everything that's wrong between them. This relationship has always had a rocky foundation, rotten with all sorts of betrayals and contentions. But they can forget, and focus on the attraction that drives them together.

"I love you." He murmurs, as if to remind her. And then, after a pause: "I wish we weren't here."

Garrett leans in and opens her mouth for him, taking in a bite of steak with her mouth already watering from the smell. She makes a soft sound of surprise then, like a tiny moan from how fucking good it is. It's probably the nicest piece of meat she's had in many years, like butter in her mouth as she chews it.

"Mmm," she answers his little three-word declaration. When she's able to talk, she asks, "Why? What do you wish we were doing?"

Dodger's shoulders lower a bit, a slow slump even as he feeds her another piece.

"Not just here. I wish we weren't in Boston, or this world. I miss being in Hell."

He worries his lip, and sets down the fork to cup her face and run his thumb along her cheek.

"I didn't have to care about anything there. I didn't matter anymore. There was something... nice, about thinking I'd never see any of these people again."

Garrett chews on her steak as she listens, turning his words over in her head. There's something relatable about it- when she first went to Zhautas, there was a true liberation in the thought of never going home. Especially when she found out what the future held for her in Thedas, she couldn't stomach the idea of returning to that horrible someday that promised violence and betrayal. But she never liked the thought of leaving her friends forever, and had only ever gotten on the ship because she was promised the possibility of her friends joining.

"I'm sorry, love," she says softly. "Personally, I'd rather be somewhere real even if it's shitty. If you don't like it here, why don't we just leave? The world is supposedly massive, so let's go somewhere else."

Dodger is quiet at that, mulling it over in his head. They could leave. Once upon a time he would have argued, claimed that Augustine needs him. His time in Hell has left him bitter, painfully aware that he needs his boss much more than his boss needs him. There was comfort in being a weapon, but that isn't who he is anymore.

"One of my contacts found an outlander in the city morgue." He mumbles, shifting the conversation suddenly. "She was missing for a while, but it looks like someone killed her. She never regenerated."
