Garrett draws a labored breath. Somehow, the soft affection is making the tightness in his chest worse, despite how badly he needs comfort.

"Right. Until then," he breathes. "Shouldn't be long."

And... then what? Then a big bad world where he has nothing and knows no one- where he knows nothing and has no one. Kirkwall wasn't half this daunting; at least he had family there and a job. At least that was a world he understood, even when it didn't make sense.

Dodger might be set on seducing Garrett, but he sees the telltale signs of strain. All of this is a lot, and Garrett has been through more than most people who have been put through reality-hopping. Dodger has his painful memories, his holes in his heart where people are distinctly missing, but he knows it's nothing compared to Garrett's.

"We can take it easy today." He mumbles, still petting Garrett gently. "Eat some chinese, watch a movie. Sleep with seven dogs on the bed."

While he speaks, the car slows down and turns off. They're in front of a tall building that nonetheless looks nearly abandoned, like it might crumble if someone looks at it wrong. A dog that definitely sounds like Crusher is barking and howling from the upstairs window, and a plastic bag passes like a tumbleweed as Dodger guides Garrett and the dogs out of the car.

"Looks like we're here."

For once, Dodger says exactly the right thing: the understanding, gentle touches, and soft hand in his hair melt a tiny iota of stress away.

Then- oh. They're here. Garrett emerges from the car and stares up at the ramshackle building towering over them, visibly unimpressed.

"This is worse than Lowtown," he remarks, taking in the traffic noise and dogs barking. Familiar barking, actually. He frowns in recognition, then perks up with a sudden smile. "Is that Crusher?"

"It's home. And yeah, that's Crusher." It's worth noting that while this definitely isn't a good neighborhood, most of the buildings on this street are in generally better condition than Dodger's. He distracts himself with something on his phone while he talks. "We're on the fifth floor, but the elevator is shit so we may as well teleport."

He offers a hand to Garrett. "Ready?"

Garrett definitely notices how shit the building is, but Dodger interrupts his thoughts. With the leashes clutched in one hand, he takes Dodger's with the other.

"Hold your breath."

There's that familiar feeling of teleportation, the worst thing ever. They end up in an apartment that looks much better than one would expect from the outside - there's barely any dust, and the furniture all looks expensive but tasteful. A few things have been knocked over by the dogs - and of course all five swarm them when they enter - but otherwise it seems like Dodger cleans almost obsessively. Through a door Garrett may notice his bedroom's walls are completely coated in photos, notes, yarn and all sorts of paper. Like a conspiracy board, but covering every inch of wall. Even some of the ceiling.

Dodger sets Garrett's armor and sword down by the door, and lets Crusher jump up into his arms, scratching the dog's neck idly. Crusher definitely looks a little thinner than he was when Garrett last saw him, and his coat has become dull again.

"Make yourself at home, I've got some food on the way. Want a drink?"

Garrett stumbles a little when they pop in, reflexively grabbing Dodger's shoulder to steady himself against the swarm of giant furry bodies. They're all losing their shit almost hysterically, and Garrett realizes as he's laughing and petting them that this is the longest most of them have ever gone without seeing him. He's never been away from them for more than a day in their entire lives, except for Ox. It takes a few minutes to calm them down and beat them back- especially Crusher, who can't seem to stop crying.

After steadying himself, he looks around at the surprisingly decent apartment. It's clean and tasteful, with expensive-looking furniture and only a few things out of place. "Sure," he says to Dodger's question. While the other man is busy with that, Garrett finds the coat closet and deposits his jacket and shoes, finding himself more and more surprised at how nicely Dodger is maintaining things. He settles for a casual, "Nice place here."

Moving further in, he finally notices the view in the other room. It actually takes him aback for a moment as he soaks in how impressively crazy it is. He doesn't have to get closer to realize what's going on there, and for a moment his brain lights up with warning bells about what kind of situation he's walking into. Insane.

Anyway.

"Hi, Crusher." He turns to the dog, purposely choosing not to deal with All That. Scritching and petting are better. But that too gives him something new to take in, and another reason to give Dodger a reproachful look. "How long have you been back here? He's already starting to look worse."

Dodger busies himself with getting them both a beer, and he tosses one to Garrett before banging the lid off his on the nearest table. There's a few marks on the edges from him doing this before, so it's clearly a habit.

"A few weeks. Maybe a month. I get busy." He picks up a squeaky ball and tosses it in hand before letting it bounce off for Max and Stella to turn and chase. "He eats when I've got time to feed him, and I can't just sit down and mix up whatever the hell you were feeding him in Hell."

Garrett gives him a Look. "Rice, frozen vegetables, and cheap meat."

Not terribly hard.

The beer proves to be surprisingly good- not as good as the beer in Ainmhian, but better than Hell, drawing an appreciative hiss from him. He opens his mouth to say something, only to reel a little under a sudden wave of fatigue that has him plopping down into the nearest chair.

"Twice a day, Dodger. Maker's balls." Another pull from the bottle, and he almost moans with pleasure. "Fuck, I haven't had a drink in so long. Some asshole demon overthrew Lucifer and shut everything down. No bar, no spa, no clubs."

All of his addictions gone. Even little diversions like manicures and hot tubs and dancing gone. Both jobs gone. All he had left was the gym, and it drove him goddamn insane.

"Yeah, I remember. Figured the sinners would have revolted by now."

Dodger regards him carefully, fighting the urge to straddle him that gets so much harder when he hears that noise. But he reigns himself in, and sits beside him on the couch. Resting his beer on his lap in a way that artistically resembles an erection. Framing is important.

"If you want to keep him, you're free to. I never wanted him in the first place."

He says, as Crusher hops up on the couch between them and Dodger's hand naturally moves to scratch his ears.

"Well, now that you're here, money's no issue. I can get you whatever you want - I'm just not home most of the time. I'm back to working for Augustine, and he has me working long hours."

Garrett cocks an eyebrow at Dodger and Crusher. "Right. You obviously hate each other."

But the moment of levity is fleeting. He sighs heavily, reaching out to scratch Crusher's other ear. "I can't just live off you. But..."

Fuck. Admitting weakness is the hardest thing. It's absurd, too- Dodger knows exactly how vulnerable he is, he knows he's being ridiculous. Without help Garrett doesn't stand a chance here. As dangerous as the man is, Garrett has no choice but to open himself up. It's a calculated risk, he tells himself to feel less helpless.

"I don't know what I'm going to do."

Dodger is silent for a while, back to scanning Garrett's face as if he'll gain some new information there. He's gotten used to keeping quiet in his time back home, never opening up to anyone the way he did in Hell.

"Can't answer that for you. I've got my own shit here, and I can point you in the right direction but I'm not gonna expect you to delve into the criminal underground with me."

He moves his beer so he can pull a cigarette out and light it, pausing to take a puff before he speaks again.

"You had horns and fangs at the hospital. How'd you manage to hide them?"

Garrett's eyes light up when he sees the cigarette, and before he realizes what he's doing, he's reached over to pluck it from Dodger's hand. He takes a long, deep drag and sinks back into the couch with a long moan of intense relief.

"Sweet fucking Maker," he sighs. "I haven't had anything to smoke in months."

His brain is vibrating at high speed, so he holds his hand out to Dodger, showing off a large ring that Dodger has never seen before.

"That. Take it off."

Dodger lets him take it, and watches him with unbridled admiration. It's such a beautiful sight, watching that smoke slide from his lips. His eyes light up even more at the phrase take it off.

He thoughtlessly pushes Crusher off of the couch, and pushes Stella away when she tries to worm up in his place. Dodger slides into Garrett's lap, careful not to put too much weight on him as he takes his cigarette back.

"I've got weed too, if you've got a craving."

He sticks his cigarette between his lips just to hold onto it, and his fingers wander over Garrett's hand affectionately before he takes the ring off.

Garrett's hands automatically settle on Dodger's hips in a sudden intimacy that takes him entirely by surprise. One minute he's moaning into a cigarette, the next he's got a lapful of beefcake. It only gets better when Dodger gives an offer that makes his eyes light up.

"Weed?" Nothing in the entire world sounds better, but that thought derails by an odd feeling that makes Garrett hiss softly.

As soon as the ring leaves his finger, his canines deform and grow out into the usual fangs, and a prickling in his scalp signals the pair of horns sprouting from his head. It feels incredibly weird and kind of hurts- but it's an intense relief, too. He sighs again, not as enthusiastically as he did for tobacco but with a hint of moan under his breath as he sags into the couch.

"That's better. Wearing it for more than a few hours at a time feels really weird."

The soft noises that escape Garrett's mouth are heavenly, and Dodger cocks his head like a dog listening to their favorite word. One of his hands wanders up to Garrett's jaw, petting his beard and then pressing a thumb into his mouth to touch one of his fangs.

"Much better." He agrees, wearing that predatory expression he always seems to get when things are decidedly going his way.

But right, he did promise weed. Dodger slides off of Garrett's lap, making sure his hands trail over the man's thighs on the way, and teleports away. A few minutes later he reappears suddenly on Garrett's lap again, holding a bag of weed in his teeth and holding a small bong in his hand. No fancy design, just the most basic bong imaginable.

"You've used these before, right?"

Garrett startles just a little bit at Dodger's return. It's been so long since they were together like this that he's not used to the man's sudden appearances anymore. Even stranger is the weird thing in his hand.

"No. Do you not use pipes?"

"Pipes are fine, these just hit a little harder. Here." He passes it into Garrett's hand, and takes the slide to fill it up. He's obviously practiced, even with moving in such close quarters. "I'll light it for you, just press your lips to the top and inhale when I pull this back out."

He's packing a one-hitter for him - Garrett deserves to get properly high, and Dodger deserves to have a properly high Garrett at his disposal.

"Think of it as smoking a whole pipe at once."

Garrett holds the weird little thing, looking at it curiously. Who designs this shit? How did someone come up with this? Wild.

"Alright. Don't think I don't know that you're just trying to get me stoned."

They both know it, but Garrett doesn't look like he's protesting when he leans in for a hit. In fact, he makes another one of those happy little sounds and looks up at Dodger with lidded eyes.

"It's been months since I've done anything fun," he confesses. "That bald little shit cut us off from everything. Drug-free, sober monogamy."

"No wonder you ended up here." He smirks, taking the bong back and preparing a hit for himself. "Your soul must have been aching for a bit of fun."

The hit passes through him like air - he's already got such a tolerance, this is really nothing for him. But it's enough of a buzz to dull his senses, stop his paranoid mind from racing so much. He sets the weed paraphernalia aside, settling on Garrett's lap and wrapping his arms around the older man's neck.

"We've covered drug-free and sober... only one place left to go, huh."

The hit doesn't bowl Garrett over too much, but it calms his own mind and drives a great deal of the anxiety away. The weird restlessness in his chest dissipates and the tension in his jaw relaxes with every breath that brings the buzz to life. It's enough that he doesn't even object when Dodger settles in and gets closer.

So close.

"Last time I let you touch me, I got in trouble," Garrett says petulantly, warming to Dodger's closeness despite his complaining.

"Who's gonna get you in trouble this time - Lucifer?"

He takes one last drag from his cigarette before mindlessly crushing it into the sidetable's surface, and abandoning it in favor of capturing Garrett's lips. His breath is full of smoke, and his kisses are slow at first but quickly become deep and desperate.

It's been too long since he had Garrett in his arms. Nights with Jason aren't anywhere as thrilling, and he'd killed a few flings out of sheer frustration. The taste of the older man's lips feels like taking off tight clothes, and finally being able to breathe.

Garrett leans into the kiss as best he can before it carries him away, breathless and uprooted by Dodger's sheer enthusiasm. His reaction is somewhat the opposite: the taste of Dodger feels like stepping into an old, shadowy place he once knew, a place filled with memories that drag cold fingers down his spine. Were it not for the drugs in his veins, he'd be backing away from the man who's hurt him so many times.

Probably, at least. He's never been good at resisting Dodger at all, but the stakes are higher here. If he dies, he won't come back.

Fortunately for Dodger, Garrett is too high to put much effort into caring. There's a part of him that's reluctant, to be sure, part of him that's uncertain and keenly aware of the danger, the part that still remembers being held down and taken in the night. He doesn't entirely kiss back at first, so much as go along with what Dodger's doing, small things barely coaxed along by Dodger's own movements. But he quickly yields to the other man's force, opening to let Dodger take his mouth fiercely with a breathless, surprised sound that's half a moan. It feels good, even though he knows it's a terrible idea. Even though the dawning realization that he's stuck here with Dodger, possibly forever, alone and vulnerable and reliant on his help, knots fear in his stomach that comes entirely from the violence between them.

The thing is, going along with it is so much easier. It feels nice and has an intensity he hasn't felt in a long time, and his body is so weak, and fighting is so hard.

He feels the reluctance, the way that Garrett is just barely meeting each of his motions and it frustrates him. But that frustration pales in comparison to his want, his need to capture and mark him.

That half-moan coarses through Dodger, like he's drinking water for the first time in days. He breaks their kiss to pant softly, a hand moving to grip Garrett by his hair, force him to look up at Dodger.

"You're just as gorgeous as I remember." He cocks his head, fire in his eyes as he licks his lips. "I want to do horrible things to you."

Dodger's tight grip on his hair makes his brain go just a little misty, much to his chagrin. Every single time someone pulls his hair he melts a little. It's ridiculous, like scruffing a kitten. He can never resist, even when the man doing it is the wrong kind of dangerous. Even when Dodger's touch makes his heart beat faster in the wrong kind of way. Garrett really is reluctant, and if he were sober he'd be giving voice to the vague no drifting through his mind.

But Dodger pulls his hair and yanks his head back, scattering pinpricks over his scalp as he's forced to look up at the man above him. With the heated compliment spoken breathlessly against his lips, Garrett starts to feel the faint first blush of arousal, a tiny kernel of warmth at Dodger's words. His own breath comes as soft panting, his parted lips swollen and red from how hard Dodger kissed him.

"Is that a compliment or a threat?" he asks, voice low and a little breathy.
