Garrett drifts a little, taking in maybe two thirds of what Dodger says. Enough to sleepily remark, "Your world's another shitty one, isn't it?"

Again he smiles, and a rough chuckle escapes him as he nods, "Yeah, it is. No asshole God this time, at least."

He's silent for a while before standing up. "I'll come pick you up when you get released, shouldn't be more than a few days. Do you have a phone?"

"Right there." Garrett sort of waves at the corner, where his pieces of armor and sword are leaned against the wall. On the little table next to them is a phone.

It's different from the other places." His brows furrow with faint worry. "It's a lot more complicated and there's nobody in it."

No database of other users with a single easily accessed network. None of those hallmarks of every otherworld he's been to before.

"Yeah, this ain't a pocket dimension. This is a real world."

He wanders over to grab Garrett's phone and starts messing with it, giving a sidelong glance to the sword and armor.

"I'll put my number in, and Scry's if you want. He runs the hospital here, best one for us to go without getting mistreated - they don't ask too many questions here, either." There's a pause. "He's my uncle. So he treats me good."

That's something that he wouldn't admit to anyone else, but... Garrett knows much more dangerous secrets about him. There's no point in hiding his relation to Scry.

A question bubbles up in Garrett's throat at the word uncle, but Dodger answers it immediately with a sentence that relaxes him visibly.

"As long as he's better than the rest of your family," he says, sounding slow and a little drunk. "I can't kick any asses like this."

"Yeah. He's alright." Dodger grumbles, sounding like a teenager complimenting their parent. "He's the closest thing I've got to family, here."

More than anything, what throws him off is the assertion that Garrett would kick Scry's ass if he wasn't good. He still hasn't gotten used to the man caring like that. It makes him pause, stewing in his own thoughts before he sighs and passes the phone over to him.

"There. You've got me and Scry in your phone. Don't worry about texting me, he'll let me know when to come get you. Just focus on getting better."

There's another moment of hesitation before he moves over to kiss Garrett's forehead before turning to leave.

Garrett nods his agreement sleepily, feeling heavy under the higher dose of drugs hitting his system. With a blurry bye, Dodger is gone, leaving Garrett alone to nap.

When he wakes up, he temporarily forgets what happened, just drugged enough to be confused and freaking out so badly that a nurse and two orderlies come. It takes a few minutes to explain where he is, but when it sinks in, it does so abruptly. The nurse on duty is harried but kind, taking a moment with him to show him how to use his phone. It proves easier than he thought, despite how much more complex the thing is than anything he's had in previous worlds. He reads a lot over the next couple days, endlessly fascinated by what he's seeing. It's surreal to finally learn about the places he'd only ever seen in TV and stories. The world is so much bigger than what he's seen, and so different- Russia is different than he thought, Mexico isn't actually yellow, and apparently Germany isn't evil, either. There's too much to take in, and every news article he reads takes him down a confused rabbit hole of googling to find out what the hell everyone is talking about.

(Central City turns out to be somewhere called Colorado, which sounds wrong. Unfamiliar. He doesn't have the heart to look for more.)

The more he learns, the more it hits him: this isn't a pocket dimension. This is a real world. This world is enormous, probably bigger than Thedas. Definitely louder. He had only been to any kind of America one time: a single night out on the town in New York, visited through a portal in Zhautas. He got a piercing while very drunk and his boyfriend healed him in an alleyway. To him, Boston looks both the same and very, very different. It's the way with all big cities, he supposes. To the uninitiated, they're all the same kind of overwhelming.

This isn't a pocket dimension. It's a real one. A harsh one that hates the poor and homeless, and his only belongings are a duffel bag and half-dozen hungry dogs. It hates outsiders and mutants, and his ignorance of everything marks him as obviously as his horns. It doesn't seem to be a fan of gay people, either, and by the end of his second night in the hospital, there's a pit in his stomach as deep as the ocean.

At least the TV is good. There are apparently companies to get videos from, but they cost money that Garrett doesn't have, so he ends up watching a lot of stuff on the hospital TV and on some free app on his phone. It's the best he can do to combat the rising anxiety, outside of morphine and cigarettes. Eventually the nurses get suspicious of his requests for morphine and heal him up some more- enough to take off the cast, but not enough for him to be at 100%. Garrett tries to heal himself a little, but magic proves difficult to cast. The pitiful little spark he manages seems to taunt him, sneering that there's nothing to worry about, because he'll have plenty of time to figure it out.

When it comes time to release him, his stomach is in knots and his body still feels weak. They let him know that they'll be discharging him soon, and Garrett has to resist the urge to ask for more time in the hospital, just to avoid the reality of leaving these walls. It's a brave new world.

The days leading up to Garrett's release are a little bit of hell for Dodger. Taking care of seven dogs, balancing that with all of Augustine's whims and visiting Jason at work when he has the time for it. At least he does manage to get ahold of Coyote, and make arrangements for Garrett's falsified documents. He nearly misses Scry's message when it's time to grab Garrett, and he's definitely late.

Dodger shows up in the hospital lobby about thirty minutes after he was supposed to, with Max and Angel on leashes beside him. His eyes light up when he sees the older man, but his body language doesn't change at all. Still, he holds himself differently than he did in Hell - he sits up straight, giving off an air that he's genuinely not someone to fuck with. An energy that suits a predator, pacing in the midst of its native prey.

"Hey." He greets neutrally, keeping his distance for now while the dogs lunge to say hi. "I figured these two would make less of a scene, but I know they'd want to see you."

When Angel jumps up, Garrett leans down to pet her gingerly, laughing at the dogs' unbridled joy. However, when Max launches himself off the ground and clear into Garrett's arms, the impact of the dog's stocky body hitting Garrett rather painfully knocks the wind out of him. "Hey, hey- shh, stop, no-" After a moment he gives up and puts Max down just to relieve the strain on his body. "It's alright, shh, I love you to, idiot."

They calm down after a moment, encouraged when Garrett helpfully closes his giant hand around Max's entire face, letting Garrett finally look up at Dodger properly. The difference in the other man's bearing strikes him immediately- this is not the same man he left. It's more like the man he first met in the club.

Somehow, the sudden chill stays inside, not touching his relatively friendly expression or posture.

"Thanks," he answers, a hand still on each head. Max has helped himself to the chair next to Garrett so the man can reach him without bending over. "I hope they haven't been completely terrible. Do you even have any uneaten furniture left?"

Talking too much. Uncertainty. Hard to navigate this situation, no footing to find, so he talks.

Dodger's gaze sweeps over Garrett, more than once as the man talks. As if he's picking apart every twitch of his facial expression, his body language, taking it all in carefully. There's a bit of silence before he answers.

"The mabari are helping. Took some work, but they know the rules now."

He may or may not have burned a few of them. Angel definitely has some singed fur around her backside.

"We should get you home. I've got a car waiting - you can walk, right?"

A bit of phrasing catches his attention- they know the rules now. It's been three days. Work? His eyes narrow ever so slightly and it takes him a second to answer.

"I'm fine."

"He's not," a passing nurse interjects.

"Don't worry about me, I told you-" Garrett leans down to pick up a large plastic bag full of armor pieces, only to contradict himself with a painful hiss.

"No lifting," she tells Dodger. To make her point, she firmly removes the bag from Garrett's hands, meeting very little resistance despite Garrett's apparent - if brief - effort to hold on to it. "He'll need a few weeks to recover fully."

Wanting to make himself useful, Garrett picks up the leashes, hiding a twinge of pain so as not to further wound his already bruised dignity.

Dodger lets him take the leashes, and instead takes the bag from the nurse. He doesn't say anything, just watching Garrett for a bit before turning to leave.

"C'mon. Let's not keep him waiting."

The car that's waiting for them is large and sleek, black with gold trims, and a small symbol on the back window that looks like an inverted delta symbol. The same symbol that Garrett has likely seen tattooed on Dodger's left thumb, printed on his wallet and hanging from Crusher's collar. Dodger ushers Garrett and the dogs into the spacious back seat - there's a black divider separating them from the driver, with a sliding window to access him if they need to. The windows are also tinted almost entirely black.

The sight of an unexpectedly nice-looking car shocks Garrett into forgetting about his anxiety. It's sleeker and cleaner than the ones around it, and it appears that gold accents are universal.

"Is this yours?" He gives Dodger an astonished look as the man beckons him in.

The inside, just as nice as the outside, carries with it the distinct air of luxury that Garrett recognizes even as an outsider to this world. This might be Garrett's first time in a car, but he sees the difference between driving your own cart and having a carriage driver. For a moment he wonders if Dodger bothered to spend money on him- until the symbol on the outside of the car dawns on him. He turns to Dodger with clear shock on his face.

"How is this yours?"

Dodger shrugs, "It's a company car. Courtesy of Victor Augustine - I'm a valuable asset, and he treats me as such. Usually I just ride my bike around, but I figured this would work better."

He shuts the door behind them, and the car drives off. Dodger's body language changes subtly now that they're in private - whether it's the car or the fact that there's no one around to impress, he looks distinctly less comfortable than he did at the clinic.

"How's your ribs? And don't lie to me this time."

Garrett is utterly failing to hide his wide-eyed gawking at- everything. The car, the seats, the strange panel in the ceiling, the straps of fabric he runs a hand over, briefly fingering an odd metal thing attached.

"Fine," he murmurs distantly, not hearing Dodger at all. His attention flickers from the metal in his hands up to the window again. The ever-changing view makes him almost dizzy. How fast are they going?

"Being in a car is nothing like seeing them on TV."

Dodger lets out a little chuff of amusement. He isn't about to chide Garrett about wearing a seatbelt, since he isn't wearing one either. They're going a few miles above the speed limit, so he figures it must be a little overwhelming.

"I told you not to lie to me." He runs his fingers over Garrett's chest, and then presses them into his ribs. "You're not fine. Are you still high?"

That gets his attention: he flinches and kind of yips in pain before turning and giving Dodger an affronted look.

"What? No! I'm not high." Angel responds to his protests by moving closer, putting her head on his knee possessively and leveling Dodger with an accusatory stare. "Did I even do something wrong, or are you just poking me for fun?"

"I'm proving that you're lying."

Dodger holds his stare for a few moments, before his shoulders slump a little and his posture softens. He shifts to move closer, letting his hand stray up to brush Garrett's hair away from his face.

"You got hit by a car. I'm allowed to be worried about you."

It takes Garrett a second but he realizes that Dodger actually asked him a question before, so his expression is a little less confused by the time Dodger moves closer. He's worried- it would be so sweet coming from somebody else. It's almost sweet now, but for the prickle of anxiety in Garrett's chest when Dodger looks at him.

Dodger. A face he never thought he'd see again. His disappearance had been a very strange one: Garrett hardly knew whether to be relieved or disappointed, and spent weeks torn between elation and grief. The months that passed were finally starting to pull Garrett out of the shadow Dodger cast over his life. To be here now - in a real world at last, possibly at the end of his journeys - only for it to be Dodger's almost feels like a death sentence.

But there's a cold comfort in having a familiar face. Even if that face knots fear in his chest, it's someone he knows. Someone who, in a way, loves him. There's a part of Garrett that will never truly shake Dodger, a part that still mourns Francis, and that part of him is why, when Garrett looks into those clear green eyes, he can't make himself pull away.

"Run the question by me again," he says softly, uncharacteristically straightforward. "I was a bit distracted by the whole "first time being in a car" thing."

Dodger's gaze wanders over him, as if he's considering something. His fingers still linger in Garrett's hair, petting him softly while he thinks.

"I asked how your ribs are." He speaks slowly, as if speaking to someone stupid. But his voice is still soft, almost affectionate. "Scry told me to take it easy on you, so I figured you still had some bruising."

With how close they are already, Dodger decides to just shift closer so their faces are close enough to kiss. He doesn't take the initiative, though, waiting for Garrett to move closer in turn.

He'll just have to keep waiting, because Garrett stays right where he is, softening under Dodger's gentle attentions.

"I've been better." It's a struggle to keep his tone up, to defy the weight dragging him down. "It's not as bad as almost getting my spine severed."

"Mm." He mumbles noncommittally, trailing his fingers down Garrett's chest and where he knows the giant scar is.

It's undeniably nice to have Garrett here. Unexpected, inconvenient, but nice. If nothing else, the two of them know each others' bodies so well that it will be a welcome distraction from his grueling work.

His tail slowly wraps around Garrett's leg, adding a bit of gentle and affectionate pressure.

"Reality-hopping is already enough of a kick from a mule... you must be tired." He gets a little impatient and shifts closer still, resting his forehead against the older man's. "I haven't moved your stuff out of my apartment. May as well stay there until you're fixed up, heh?"

Garrett draws a labored breath. Somehow, the soft affection is making the tightness in his chest worse, despite how badly he needs comfort.

"Right. Until then," he breathes. "Shouldn't be long."

And... then what? Then a big bad world where he has nothing and knows no one- where he knows nothing and has no one. Kirkwall wasn't half this daunting; at least he had family there and a job. At least that was a world he understood, even when it didn't make sense.

Dodger might be set on seducing Garrett, but he sees the telltale signs of strain. All of this is a lot, and Garrett has been through more than most people who have been put through reality-hopping. Dodger has his painful memories, his holes in his heart where people are distinctly missing, but he knows it's nothing compared to Garrett's.

"We can take it easy today." He mumbles, still petting Garrett gently. "Eat some chinese, watch a movie. Sleep with seven dogs on the bed."

While he speaks, the car slows down and turns off. They're in front of a tall building that nonetheless looks nearly abandoned, like it might crumble if someone looks at it wrong. A dog that definitely sounds like Crusher is barking and howling from the upstairs window, and a plastic bag passes like a tumbleweed as Dodger guides Garrett and the dogs out of the car.

"Looks like we're here."

For once, Dodger says exactly the right thing: the understanding, gentle touches, and soft hand in his hair melt a tiny iota of stress away.

Then- oh. They're here. Garrett emerges from the car and stares up at the ramshackle building towering over them, visibly unimpressed.

"This is worse than Lowtown," he remarks, taking in the traffic noise and dogs barking. Familiar barking, actually. He frowns in recognition, then perks up with a sudden smile. "Is that Crusher?"
