Dodger reacts with a small sneeze go the poke, but still tries his best to look long-suffering and unimpressed. It doesn't really work.

"You're just soft."

He crawls over to flop on top of Garrett, stretching out now that he can properly get comfortable. His hands move to Garrett's hair, idly playing with it while they talk.

"I think I'm starting to change my mind. I'm not sure exactly what I want... Except that I want you."

"First of all, I'm not soft," he corrects, poking Dodger in the Downstairs Region. And you aren't one to be talking."

However much Garrett wants to seem bossy, the hair-playing can absolutely stay. It's too nice for him to bother acting like he's annoyed over the safeword thing.

"Although it is nice to know that you aren't indiscriminately horny for horrific abuse anymore. At least not all the time. And you got fucked without any problems- now that's what I call personal growth."

Dodger chews his cheek for a moment, his expression muddling a bit.

To some extent, that's one of the easier things to talk about, out of this whole mess. Ironically, easier than admitting that he's starting to question that unending search for torture and abuse.

Garrett contemplates that for a brief moment before his expression crumples into the kind of self-directed cringe that involves looking away and rubbing his forehead tiredly, pinching the bridge of his nose.

"Maker's tits, I can't believe I didn't think of that," he mutters. "Well, I'm sure we'll come up with some options for next time that won't kick you right in a childhood trauma."

"Kind of a big target." He comments, with some level of compassion.

Dodger reaches to push Garrett's hand away from his face, and lace their fingers together while he kisses him. It's slow and gentle, but there's still that quiet undercurrent of frustration.

"I liked everything up until that." Another kiss. "Especially that whole 'thank you father' shit. You're a real freak, you know that?"

His cheeks actually color a little with the faintest tinge of embarrassment. Yeah, Garrett knows exactly how messed-up that was, and is a little aghast at himself.

"I didn't used to be like this," he says defensively between kisses. "It's your fault for getting weird about it when I was just trying to be a demon dad."

"Right, and it's my fault you got drunk and fucked me." He lets out an amused little scoff, and follows up with another kiss. "You were already fucked up, that's why you like me."

Although Dodger's always found it interesting how Garrett manages to be the sane and innocent one between them. He's definitely got some kinks that Dodger isn't quite into, and more experience being pushed past his limits... but he guesses Garrett isn't as used to the complete depravity he's indulged in the past, so they're about even.

To his surprise, Garrett finds himself actually wanting to argue the point, blaming past-Dodger for getting fucked by his own dad. The urge comes up against hard against his sense of ethics, somewhat jarringly - a battle between good sense (not blaming the victim) and pure emotion (being petty and bratty whenever Dodger says things).

So honestly, it's a good thing Dodger kisses him. It takes away his chance to say something stupid. By the time Dodger finishes speaking, Garrett has something new to defend himself from.

"I wasn't as fucked up when I met you," he points out. "You've done a lot to me."

Dodger casts his gaze over Garrett, admiring his face for a moment before stealing another kiss.

"Yeah. Guess you got a point."

His phone goes off, and he groans quietly. Of all the fucking times. But he still sits up, and reaches for the nightstand... Fuck, nope, he left it with his clothes in the living room.

"Shit."

Garrett frowns and rolls over enough to drape an arm heavily over Dodger's chest, in a knowingly futile attempt to keep him from getting up.

"Stay with me. I had more cuddling planned, possibly with cock-teasing."

Dodger pauses, and lets out a long sigh before sinking back into bed.

"He's gonna get pissed at me again."

There's less urgency in his voice this time. He could definitely push Garrett off if he wanted to, but he craves this closeness.

Garrett snuggles in a little closer, not wanting to push too hard too fast.

"He's too used to you not having a life." It has a tone of that needs to change.

Dodger rolls over to snuggle back into Garrett, and runs his fingers softly through Garrett's beard. He doesn't speak at first, still wrestling with the urge to defend his master.

"Everything will fall apart if he loses me." It's something he's said before, although there's less conviction now. "First his movement, then the whole city's order."

"Then he should treat you like a valuable asset," Garrett points out reasonably, though his tone is mellow from the gentle petting. "Not a slave or a mangy rat."

"Maybe he's just not used to what I'm turning into." He ponders. "I was a mangy rat when he found me. Too doped up to speak English and honestly, couldn't say why he wanted me. He's got a weird way of picking out the people that'll serve him the best."

His phone goes off again. There's another moment of hesitation, but Dodger burrows closer to Garrett instead until there really isn't any closer he could get.

Garrett welcomes him warmly, wrapping strong arms around him and weaving their legs together until they're a tangle of limbs, all snuggly and nearly-naked (except for Garrett's underwear). He draws the blanket over them a little higher.

"You're not going to let him beat the shit out of you again, are you?"

Dodger melts against Garrett's skin, but the question makes him pause. He hesitates before he can meet the older man's eyes, and his skin turns a little warmer as if to soften his answer.

"I can't stop him. He can shut my powers off."

He could still stop him. Somehow he's just never managed to.

"So can I," Garrett points out, stroking Dodger's arm affectionately. He melts into Dodger, comforted by the addicting warmth. "But you can still hold your own against me even without powers."

Garrett suspects that Dodger lets it happen. It fits with everything else he knows about the man, including his weird attraction to Augustine and the desire to be abused and beaten.

Dodger's gaze wavers a little, and he lets out a quiet sigh. Yeah, Garrett can see straight through him.

"Fine. Maybe I just don't want things to change." He admits. It's easier to say it out loud for Garrett. "If I fight back, it won't stop until he's dead. Then someone will have to pick up the pieces and I... I don't want that."

That... is a lot harder to argue with. That's about changing his entire life, taking over an operation. Garrett has too much experience with rebuilding the ruins of a tattered life to begrudge Dodger his wish for stasis.

Instead, he tightens his hold on the younger man in a brief squeezing hug. "Then I'll just have to keep healing you. Eventually he'll get sick of it and stop trying."

As much as the subject makes him uncomfortable, the hug warms him. The safety of knowing he can come back to Garrett, over and over. Garrett has been the most stable thing in his life for a long time.

"I'll make sure not to get too banged up." Dodger's eyes slide closed, and he strays a hand lower to trace patterns over Garrett's side. "Sooner or later things are gonna have to change. People don't last around me. I just wanna stay put while I can."

Garrett snuggles into him, as soothed by his warmth as Dodger is by Garrett's bulk. He really does love being close like this, no matter what Dodger does to him or how his heart races oddly sometimes when they're together.

"Instead of just accepting that people don't last, you could keep trying this whole self-improvement thing you've got going," he says gently, bookended by soft hums of contentment at the hand on his side. "It's working pretty well so far. I could never have most of these conversations with the man you used to be."

Dodger is quiet for a while, silently mulling those words over. It is true - he's changed a lot since Garrett met him. Occasionally he wonders whether the changes are good, but maybe he is getting the hang of it. Too late to salvage anything he had in Hell, but not too late to keep his newest lover. So far.

"You can teach a wolf a couple tricks but that doesn't make it a dog." A pause. "...Do you really think you can make something good out of me?"

"I think so," Garrett muses. "You aren't really a wolf, you're a big, powerful dog that was beaten too many times. Sometimes those are beyond saving, but sometimes they can heal."

He kisses Dodger's head, soft and scratchy. Sometimes there are doubts that Dodger could ever have a meaningful moral compass, with his skewed sense of the value of life and his head being honestly screwed on wrong about violence and blood, but the man has already changed so much- he can love without wanting to destroy, he was unnerved enough by his own slip-ups to overcorrect and lock Garrett away in (mostly) consensual protection.

Garrett's words warm something in him, and he relaxes a bit more into the man's arms. He's heard it before - that he isn't that scary, that his lover feels safe with him. But with Garrett it's different, this man has seen the worst of Dodger and stuck with him anyway. There's something to be said for that. Fuck, even Janet couldn't do that.

Dodger opens his eyes, and leans up to kiss Garrett. Slow, and loving.

"I want to be someone who deserves you."
