"Sure." Dodger grins playfully, lighting her cigarette with a glint in his eyes that says I'm laughing at you in my head. "Atlas does whatever we can to waste Scott Archer's money."

Augustine laughs quietly, "The man's dumb as a brick but he keeps the lights on."

"You'll see what we mean - he's a rich kid, straight to the bone. The money drips off him."

Garrett laughs and puts her absurdly girly cigarette to her lips, more than happy to join in the mockery of the rich.

"Is he the type who wipes his arse with $100 bills and thinks the solution to poverty is just ask your parents for money?" She jokes. "I've met more than a few of those."

"Dodger's like me - grew up on the streets, worked his way up. People like that, you can look at 'em and tell they fought for what they got. We're a different breed."

The car slows and finally parks. Dodger teleports for the first time in a while, and waits outside the car to help Garrett out. In that brief moment without him, Augustine's eyes are blatantly trailing over her body again.

Garrett laughs her agreement with their mockery, chiming in that, "You can always tell the ones who don't know what it's like to have it hard." Then they're parking, and Dodger leaves them.

Augustine is more blatant than anyone she's met before - in her limited experience going out in public as a woman - and it takes her aback a little. It definitely feels performative, like he's deliberately doing it to send a message to the both of them. Garrett avoids his gaze in that brief moment, putting out her cigarette and delicately putting the thing back in its box before extending her hand to Dodger and getting out.

She sticks close by her boyfriend, for now. They all know that Victor has his eye on her, but at least for now she'd like to keep up the pretense that she's actually supposed to be here with Dodger.

"This place looks quite nice," she remarks idly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "I can't wait to spend someone else's money here."

"Everything tastes better when it's free." He grins, pinching her waist playfully as he guides her inside.

The staff seem to know them, and they can walk straight past the line to get in. Augustine walks ahead, and Dodger guides Garrett into a private room divided off by a sliding door. The air inside smells of a thick mix of cigarette smoke (better than Dodger's, at least) and delicious food.

"Augustine, Dodger! Sorry we started a bit without you." Archer is a tall and slender man, blonde and blue-eyed and generally the exact carbon cutout of a White American Male. He's dressed in a pale gold suit, and a red-headed woman in a fancy cocktail dress is draped over his arm.

"Who's your friend?" The woman chimes in, sitting up to let Dodger feign kissing her hand.

"This is Marian Hawke. Marian, these are Scott Archer and Jazzlyn Summers. Archer is a professional investor or some shit-"

"Stock trader and investment broker."

"-Yeah, investment shit, that's what I said. And Jazzlyn's father works for Augustine on weapon design."

"Mr. Archer, Ms. Summers, delighted to meet you," Marian says charmingly, extending her hand to the woman and offering it graciously to the man. "There's no offense at all about starting early, so long as we can have some."

Her eyes rove over the table, taking in foods she doesn't actually recognize but that look pretty damn good. Garrett has no idea what a stock trader is (other than that it's fancy and sometimes involves jumping out of windows), and only has a vague idea of what investment broker might mean, but food and small talk she can always handle. She waits for Dodger to pick a seat and starts to move to follow him, knowing the futility in it even as she takes a step.

Jazzlyn catches her glance and motions for Garrett to sit beside her, followed by a look at Dodger. It takes him a moment, but it clicks and he takes a seat to leave Garrett safely nested between them. Augustine sits between Dodger and Archer, already taking a share to eat. There's still a sense of that anxiety from Augustine being here, but the presence of the other two seems to have calmed Dodger down considerably - there's a bit of his Penance self showing through, the way he was around Squalo and Hector.

"Shame we couldn't get Johnny and Palo here." Archer comments, offering Dodger a beer. "They never visit me."

"Palo would rather blow you than leave Boston." Dodger scoffs, taking it and downing half of it.

While they're chattering, Jazzlyn helpfully fills a plate for Marian with a bit of everything they have at their tables, and offers her a beer as well. "If you don't drink, I can go get you a soda. Also - just call me Jazzlyn."

Dodger makes a comment about their friend sucking Archer's dick and before she can stop herself, Garrett says, "Maybe he should try it."

Then she laughs it off and takes a beer from Jazzlyn, already relaxed and happy at having someone here who gets it. It feels odd to be on the other side of watching women somehow telepathically communicate, but she's grateful. The little squeeze to Dodger's thigh tells him so, as does her relaxed smile.

"Oh, I definitely drink," she assures the other woman. "Are we done ordering, or is this just the appetizers?"

"Just the appetizers for now. Whatever you don't eat, we can make sure gets boxed up for you."

"Just keep the booze flowing and I'll be fine." Dodger grins. The squeeze to his thigh distracts him a little, and he glances questioningly at Garrett - the signal was completely missed, but he appreciates the placement of her hand at least.

"So, Marian-" Archer offers, "It's pretty rare to see one of Dodger's dates. How long have you known him?"

It seems, for now, that Augustine is keeping to himself and letting the others engage. But Dodger leans over to him, and they begin a whispered conversation that's drowned out by the restaurant's music.

At the question, Garrett squeezes Dodger's thigh sharply, nails digging in. They talked about her fake backstory, but there's still a surge of panic just for a second before her brain kicks in.

"About three months." She puts her beer down and drums her fingers on the table, trying to ignore the weird itching in her scalp. It flares up sometimes, and she can't figure out why. "I was going stir-crazy in Boston, so he offered to bring me along here. I'd never been- to New York before."

She very nearly said on a plane, but caught herself. It's hard to remember that she has to pretend to be from some completely different place she's never even seen.

"You've been missing out!" Jazzlyn answers brightly, "I'm actually from the midwest. We live in Albany now but I love visiting the city whenever I can. Not to mention seeing Scottyyyy..."

Archer blushes clearly, and takes a moment to drink before piping up, "Maybe Dodger can show you a few sights while you're here. Try to keep him from staying in his hotel room the whole time."

Dodger seems to have either ignored or once again misunderstood her signal. He glances at her again, but his focus is still on Augustine. Jazzlyn waves for his attention. "Hey, Dodger- what happened to Jason?"

He pauses, and shrugs. "Fuck Jason."

"Shut the fuck up." Augustine growls lazily, "Stevenson's still working for me. As long as he doesn't blow a hand off fumbling another goddamn job."

Garrett glances at the two men uneasily, though her expression stays light, before reverting her focus back to the friendlier two. "So, what are your recommendations? What sights should I see first? We have one extra day to have fun with."

While they continue to chatter, Garrett continues to have fun with the other two, at some point ordering herself a drink that sounds fruity and looks very colorful, asking Archer and Jazzlyn about themselves, how long they've known the other two, how long they've known each other, etc. It's a very nice time, and she finds herself feeling a buzz after a while.

From chattering with them, Garrett learns that Archer and Jazzlyn have known each other for ten years and dating for six. Jazzlyn is 27 and Archer is 34, but neither of them acknowledge the stigma. Jazzlyn has known Augustine for most of her life, but Archer didn't meet him until he got his first job. In fact, it seems most of Augustine's entourage has known each other and him for years before Dodger came along - by this world's timeline he's only been associated with them for a year and a half. Apparently, someone named Palo is very jealous of this.

It doesn't seem that Augustine is actually all that interested in the conversation - he shuts Archer down each time he tries to speak to him. Instead he and Dodger stay engaged in their own conversation, with Dodger largely ignoring his friends. And after a while, Dodger just focuses on his phone instead.

"You spend too much time on that thing..." Jazzlyn play-mopes, reaching over to tap Dodger's hand. "Hey Dodger, daddy's sending me to Boston in a month or so. Think you can keep me company?"

"Hm?" Dodger glances up, "Sure. I guess."

"No running off like last time."

"I had shit to do. For you."

Augustine cuffs Dodger on the back of the head, which makes him flinch again.

For what it's worth, Garrett doesn't even know that there's a stigma to their age difference. They're all adults, so it doesn't matter to her. She's more interested in the realization that Dodger is relatively new to these people- and it brings to light exactly why it's been so hard for the man to break free. The cult was so recent, and Dodger in this timeline is still so young, and he's been with them for less than two years.

It's all very interesting. The dynamic with Jazzlyn... she isn't sure what to make of it, except that she seems either flirty or like she's intent on needling him because she knows she can. Not that Garrett can blame her; someone that hot and scary must be fun to mess with if you know they can't do anything about it.

After Augustine hits Dodger, Garrett buries her displeasure in a deep drink from her glass to hide her expression, then texts Dodger:

Jazzlyn also recoils a bit when Dodger is hit, but she seems much more immune to it. She's watched a lot of this, and it's stopped bothering her as much as it should. She's halfway through telling Garrett another story when Archer looks at his phone and nudges her. "It's getting late, I think we should get going. It was lovely to meet you, Marian - I'll leave a card at the front so you can keep ordering after we go."

"Awww... okay. Marian, here's my number-" Jazzlyn scribbles it quickly on a napkin, "Text me so I can let you know when I'm in town. Okay? And Dodger, treat this one nicely."

She gives him a look as she gets up that implies she knows what he can be like. Dodger answers with a scoff, but it's surprisingly playful. And he makes no effort to hide checking her out while they leave.

"Keep your eyes to yourself, kid." Augustine growls. "And eat something, for God's sake."

Dodger looks down at his plate blankly. By human standards he's eaten a lot, but nowhere near what Dodger usually eats.

Several things happen in quick succession, some baffling (just leaving your credit card so other people can infinitely spend your money??) and some nice (making a new friend). She glances up from putting Jazzlyn's number into her phone to find Dodger staring at Jazzlyn's ass.

"Dodger!" She whines, doing a pitch-perfect imitation of a jealous date. They both know she doesn't care, and that she in fact also checked the hotties out a little, but there's a part to play here. "Why don't you focus on your food, alright? I have to find the bathroom."

"Sure." Dodger nods, guiding her over to kiss her cheek before he lets her go.

Just before she closes the door behind her, Augustine can be heard hitting Dodger again, followed by an indignant "I'm eating, fuck!"

Garrett rolls her eyes but wanders off to the bathroom anyway. She touches up her lipstick and puts that shit over it that's supposed to keep it from smudging then uses the restroom while waiting for it to set. Afterwards she wanders off to the bar and orders a drink, telling them what tab to put it on.

A few minutes later, she returns to the private room with an appletini in hand.

Dodger is outside of the room when she approaches, speaking to one of the staff members. The person leaves and Dodger hesitates, just long enough to squeeze Garrett's arm comfortingly and whisper, "You okay? I gotta step out for a second."

Garrett nods and answers with a hushed, "I'm fine. Let me know if you need anything."

After a little arm squeeze she goes back into the room, greeting Augustine with a smile. "Victor, sorry for being gone for so long. I got a bit distracted by the bar."

"Not a problem. Dodger should be back in a while, in the meantime... I can pick your mind a little."

There's a waitress clearing up the leftover food, but otherwise they're alone now. Augustine motions for her to sit beside him in Dodger's chair, which is uncomfortably warm from his body heat.

"Dodger didn't talk much about you. Where are you from?"

Garrett takes a seat next to Augustine, already resigned to how this is going to go. Too warm by half, starting to get tipsy, and still working on her food. She hitches up a convincing smile and tries not to look like she's making shit up as she goes.

"I don't like to talk about myself much," Garrett answers, taking a sip from her drink. "My childhood was incredibly boring, but lonely. A tiny little town with more cows than people, and I think only two mutants in the whole place, until my father passed. I like Boston a lot."

That gets a chuckle out of him. "Hey, boring is better than half the fucks that work for me. Even the over-the-table pencil-pushers seem to have it rough."

He slides his latest glass of whiskey toward her.

"Chill this for me, wouldja?"

Garrett wraps her hand around it and lets the whiskey itself freeze over- but freezing whiskey is no small feat, and the glass itself becomes so cold that a layer of ice forms around the outside of the glass, like the layer of dangerous sparkle that coats the world after an ice storm. The whiskey itself only has a thin frozen layer at the top, easily broken when she nudges the glass, but getting alcohol to freezing point at all is impressive. She's more than a little proud of herself for managing the spell quietly, with no fanfare or hand motions, without exploding the glass.

"There you go. You might want a napkin to hold it, freezing alcohol isn't easy."

"Sure." He says it the same way as Dodger, with the undertone of superiority and suspicion.

Augustine sips his whiskey with a quiet sound of appreciation, and his other hand once again strays down to Garrett's thigh.

"You're a frost mutant, then. Dodger seems to have a kink for them." He watches her carefully - his eyes are a piercing sort of blue, that seem to be staring straight into her. "How'd you meet him?"
