Dodger waves him off with a hand, shooting him a very quick, sharp look.

"I can cover the cost. You'll have my credit card on file, no need for things to get complicated."

The woman purses her lips, and her hands shake as she moves back to her computer. The price is reasonable and the car is old, but serviceable. Dodger pays for it, takes the keys and slides his gun back into it's holster, and pauses to look the woman over.

"Get a lower cut shirt. Those tits should get shown off."

If Garrett doesn't follow him, Dodger will tug on his shoulder to get him going as he leaves.

While Dodger is busy being an asshole, Garrett subtly and quietly pulls a $100 bill from his wallet and puts the wallet back in his pocket. Right before leaving, when Dodger tugs on his shirt, Garrett slides the hundred across the counter at her without a word.

Once they're outside, he gets into whatever car Dodger indicates and quietly says, "When we stop, I'm going to punch you in the face."

Dodger notices Garrett bribing the woman, but just puts it aside for now. He just rolls his eyes, waiting until they're headed to the car to argue.

"Why? I got us a car. Neither of us have a license, we don't have the option to do it legally."

"You didn't have to steal and make a comment about her tits," he fires back. "Were you trying to ruin her day as much as possible, or did it just come naturally?"

Garrett lets himself into the car and sighs heavily, leaning against the window.

Dodger slams the door a little harder than necessary as he enters the driver's side, but doesn't start the car. He just sits there, grumbling and then turning to glare at Garrett.

"Don't be a bitch. I took you out here to calm you down, do I need to change everything about how I act to make you comfortable?"

Garrett can admit that there's probably a point hidden somewhere in there, but he still fires back a retort.

"Avoiding armed robbery on a date is a pretty reasonable standard, don't you think?"

"Your friends back home were criminals and refugees. I kill people for money, and you've killed me for no fucking reason. You're going to have to wrap your head around the fact that sometimes things have to be done the hard way. I'd rather threaten someone with an empty gun than waste the entire day arguing with her until we have to go home without seeing any fucking cows or whatever the fuck you want."

His breath is coming out hot enough to make heat waves, but when he notices he just angrily puts the AC on to counteract it.

Garrett listen to the entire outburst, getting temporarily stuck on the no reason bit. But the rest of it is more or less reasonable- he is a criminal and a murderer, even if he spent years trying to repress that part of himself for the sake of someone better than him. And Dodger is very clearly out of his comfort zone here.

There's a period of silence after Dodger's rant ends. A minute before Garrett speaks again.

"You have an interesting definition of no reason." Then he sighs and looks over at Dodger, brows furrowed but tone a little lighter. "I guess being with a straight-laced hero type who loves cops got to me more than I thought. My friends from home would be so disappointed in me."

Dodger opens his mouth to argue further, but just closes it and sets his jaw bitterly. He starts the car, and starts to pull out of the parking spot while he offers another jab.

"Sorry I'm not him."

"That's not what I meant," he says, a little bemused. There's a tinge of frustration at Dodger's jealousy, but he also knows that he hasn't made it easy on the man, being hung up on an idealized version of his lost love. "It was just sharing my thoughts about why I've gotten so uptight."

Because not wanting to commit armed robbery is definitely uptight. Yes.

"After needing to repress that side of myself for so long, it started to sink in. But Barry didn't have to deal with the bullshit that mutants and mages do. I've sort of forgotten what that kind of life is like. Until now, at least."

Well... It's a fair point. Dodger knows plenty about having to repress himself, about needing to be soft and kind hearted and never letting someone see the sick twisted monster hiding in his veins.

"Pulling out a gun isn't the end of the world."

At least he isn't fighting anymore.

"I'll return the car when we're done and I'll pay for it. Even if she tries to go to the cops, they won't touch me."

He opens his window, and shuffles in his pocket for a cigarette. Which makes him veer dangerously to the side.

When the gigantic contraption hurtling down the road at unnatural speeds swerves almost off the fucking road, Garrett lets out a high-pitched scream.

"DODGER," he yelps, making as if to grab the wheel before thinking better of it.

Dodger doesn't mind his own haphazard driving, but what he does mind is Garrett's reaction. He forces the car back onto the road and switches hands so he can grab Garrett's wrist, probably leaving a bruise as he shoves it back.

"WHAT." He snarls back, not taking his eyes off the road. "Keep your hands to yourself or we'll end up in a fucking ditch."

Another attempt to get his cigarettes and he manages (with only a slight swerve) to get the pack out of his pocket. But with his level of frustration and the concentration needed, that's as far as he can get. He lets out a little grumble and shoves the pack at Garrett.

"Get one out for me."

"What the fuck," Garrett yelps, pulling his bruised wrist away with a hiss of pain.

The continued swerving scares him, but not as much as the prospect of provoking another explosive reaction from Dodger, so he white-knuckles the dashboard with snippets of long-forgotten prayers flitting through his mind. Then, suddenly, there's a pack of cigarettes in his hand, and he blinks at Dodger owlishly.

"Right." He opens the pack with trembling hands, suddenly reeling with the full weight of his culture shock and inexperience. There have been bigger dangers and worse terrors in his life, but the utter lack of control here is what really has him rattled. "Dodger, you know I've never been in a car moving this fast, right? The only things faster were trains, but that's- it's different, somehow."

Dodger doesn't answer until he has his cigarette, lit and clasped in his lips. Now they're going mostly straight at least, although Dodger overcompensates a little each time he moves the wheel.

"I'll slow down a bit. But I guess it's only fair to say I don't know how to drive."

The cigarette cools him down, and he takes deep breaths of smoke while he slows the car and tries to get better control of it.

"Keep your eyes out for cows."

Garrett takes deep breaths, too, unconsciously mirroring his boyfriend's breathing. It feels a little like getting in sync, like tuning himself to the other man's patterns. It's calming, in a way.

"Something tells me that mean sucking you off while we drive would be a bad idea."

He makes it sound like a joke, somehow, but they both know it really isn't. And yes, he does keep his eyes out for cows - after firing off a quick text to Coyote.

"Maybe. But you did offer."

He's settling down a bit, at least back to his baseline of stressed anger simmering under a general calm. He glances at Garrett long enough to catch him messing with his phone, but tries to shake off the intrusive thoughts about what he might be doing.

"Who knows, might help me focus."

Garrett puts the phone back in his pocket and looks over at Dodger skeptically. His hand drifts over to Dodger's knee, a little tentative just from the nerves still jangling on edge from being in this accursed thing.

"If we start to swerve, I'm putting your dick away and waiting until the train."

Dodger smirks as Garrett starts to touch him, and he slows down a bit more so he doesn't have to think as much. He's already decided that if Garrett tries that shit he'll just shove him down, but no need to point it out.

"Look, horses." He murmurs, nodding to their right, to a small paddock with three horses wandering around and grazing.

Garrett whips his head to the right and perks right up at the sight. "Pull over!"

As soon as the car comes to a stop he gets out, looking around for something more interesting than grass- which he explains to Dodger. "Wait, look at that- is that a cherry tree? Come on."

He takes Dodger by the hand and pulls him over to a tree by the paddock fence, which has been suspiciously stripped away on one side. Clearly, the horses like it, so Garrett grabs a handful. "We can't give them the pits, so..." Something rather genius occurs to him, and he offers one to Dodger. "Can you use your claws, love?"

Dodger stops the car, a little bemused by the sudden shift. Garrett is already out, seeking out a snack for the horses and dragging Dodger into it. He groans softly, but nods.

"Sure, but I don't know how they work."

He flexes his hand experimentally, trying to call them out. Nothing. Another attempt, and he settles for cutting it with his teeth and spitting out the bit he'd taken off.

"Here."

"Thanks."

Looking at him quizzically, Garrett takes the cherry and pops it into his own mouth cheekily. There's a gleam in his eye that usually comes before terrible ideas- or very, very good ones.

"I have another idea."

Garrett drops the cherries and pins Dodger to the tree, kissing him furiously with a hand fisted in his hair. It's a hurricane of a kiss: all teeth and tongue, heat and breath and hips grinding tight together.

Dodger makes a small noise of protest, but he melts immediately into the kiss. His hands find Garrett's hair and his hip, pulling him close and grinding harshly against him.

No claws yet. But they'll get there.

Garrett tightens his grip on Dodger's hair and yanks hard enough to hurt. He wants to cause pain, to needle the other man, to get his heart racing and blood pumping and hormones raging.
