"You just might be. I might have to spend a little more time with you, get to know you a little better."

Augustine's hand is moving uncomfortably far up her leg when the door finally opens and more men step in. Some obviously rich business men, some just as tough and uncomfortable in their suits as Dodger. Augustine's hand immediately moves to brush Garrett's cheek playfully before he lets her go.

Dodger sits his chair up properly, and gets up to whisper in Garrett's ear. "This shit's a little over your head, you might wanna step out. I'll find you when it's over, we'll get something to eat afterward. Okay?"

Garrett is saved from having to answer that most aggressive of come-ons by the arrival of some men in suits. She gives Augustine a playful smile in answer to his touch, hiding her relief at Dodger finally telling her she can go. With a See you later, Victor," and a quick reassuring squeeze of Dodger's hand, she steps out.

Unsure of how far she should wander, Garrett ends up in the hotel bar, nursing her second drink (somehow even stronger than the first) and watching TV. She still can't follow baseball, really, so she's subtly looking up rules while watching, until another patron sees her phone and gallantly mansplains that Brits like her need an explanation from a real American. Gun to her head, she couldn't say how long she's been sitting there when Dodger finally comes to find her.

It takes a good long while for Dodger to return, but he eventually gets out and tracks Garrett down. And of course he finds her at the bar, trapped by some dumb fuckhead. Dodger has been avoiding teleportation around humans, so he walks up and grips the man's shoulder. His eyes are on Garrett.

"There you are. Been looking all over for you."

It's a lie. Dodger is a little overwhelmed by the amount of people here, but he still has a strong enough sense of smell to track Garrett down. The man turns to argue, until he's faced with Dodger's scarred face and piercing gaze. It barely takes a second for him to back off, and Dodger slinks in to block him and guard his partner.

"Augustine gave me a second to pick you up. He wants to treat us to dinner, he'll probably want to feel you up again. If you want, I'll tell him you blacked out and we can sneak off to eat dinner by ourselves. It's up to you."

It's crass and thuggish, but Garrett can't help laughing at the way the man backs away from Dodger like a scared dog. She leans in and brushes her lips very lightly to Dodger's cheek - the way she'd practiced, to avoid lipstick stains - by way of greeting.

"You know, if you gave him another hour, he probably would have gotten around to explaining what an out is." It's pure amusement. Her fingers go to his hair, ruffling it lightly in her search for affection that won't mess with her makeup. "Won't Augustine find out if you lie to him? I don't want you getting in trouble."

Dodger gives her a roguish grin, and answers her kiss with another on her forehead and a hand playing with her hair. It's not just that he feels more comfortable passing as straight, there's a certain level of power that comes from wearing a suit and having a beautiful woman hanging off of him. And he's lapping it up.

"What he doesn't know can't hurt him. I'll deal with it if it comes up." A pause. "Anyway, I'm pretty sure I pissed off one of the other bodyguards. Chances are I'm already booked for a fight tonight."

Garrett leans into his hand, her eyes meeting his longingly. As much as she would rather spend the evening with him, something nags at her...

"I don't want to see you beaten to a pulp by that bastard again," she murmurs. "Why don't we stay here an extra night and take tomorrow for ourselves?"

He could argue, but there's really no reason to. He knows how much Garrett hates his magnetic attraction to pain - Dodger himself doesn't care how many times he gets hurt, but he knows other people do. And damned if it hasn't started finally getting through to him.

"Alright. Deal." He captures her lips softly, careful not to smudge her makeup, and pulls his phone out to text Augustine. While he does he glances back at Garrett with a bit of anxiety creeping into his tone. "So... what's your impression of him?"

Garrett flags down the bartender while Dodger gets out his phone and writes their room number on the tab. She asked Dodger before the meeting how this works, because they both knew she'd find her way to the liquor eventually. Kind of cool that they can just put everything on Augustine's tab and make it his problem.

The question gets a somewhat sharp look. "I think he should have brought his own date if he wanted somewhere to put his hands." A small sigh escapes through her nose. "He doesn't see you as a person, does he?"

He hesitates slightly.

"Yeah."

He sets his jaw, pausing and tightening his grip on his phone. He really prefers to pretend Augustine cares about him to some degree, but he knows he's just a tool.

"He does what he wants and I make sure it goes smoothly. and believe it or not, some people are jealous of that."

Garrett's hand goes to his hair again, twirling a lock around her delicate finger.

"I'm sorry, love. I know you wanted this to go well, but I don't especially like him. Just because you're an idiot doesn't mean he should talk about you like that."

Dodger's nose wrinkles with amusement, and his hands move down to her waist to pull her closer. Just to feel their bodies against each other, even if they can't do anything about it.

"Shut up." It's dripping with affection, and he lets out a soft and contented sigh. He really doesn't want to pull away from her.

Garrett's full lips twist into a sweet little smile, one she shares with him when leaning in close to brush their noses together.

"Never."

Her arm winds around his waist, as close as she can without seeming indecent in public, as she drinks in the affection. In fact, she's on the point of abandoning her lipstick commitment in favor of a kiss when an interruption from a familiar voice startles her.

"Am I interrupting something?"

Dodger jerks away from Garrett, his face tinted pink as soon as he realizing Augustine is watching. He bites his lip, messes with the bandage under his sleeve, and finally turns to face his boss.

"Ready to head out, boss?"

"You've got lipstick on your mouth, kid."

"...Yeah." He wipes his mouth with the back of his hand.

"Come on. I got us some reservations at the usual place - private room, and a visit from Archer and Summers."

At the mention of those names, Dodger seems to visibly grow more tired. Garrett has probably heard those names before when Dodger is on the phone, but he never gives many details. Just that they're investors, and that he oscillates between calling them friends and wastes of space.

Garrett tries not to perk up at the names - more things to learn about her boyfriend's life, more ways to see behind the curtain. Hopefully, they'll be better than Augustine, but she isn't holding out hope. The phrase private room, though, is a unique dread all its own- a private room for a wealthy, powerful man means he can do anything he wants. Hopefully the man has some sense of subtlety in something approaching public.

"I can't wait," she says, hitching up a smile. She moves to thread her arm through Dodger's, ready to follow the men out to whatever car awaits them.

They lead her to a black car in front of the hotel. It isn't quite a limo, but it's in the same category. At the very least it has enough space for Augustine to sit across from them, and a panel separating them from the driver. As soon as they're settled Augustine pulls out a cigar, and Dodger naturally lights it with his fingers.

"You like chinese food, right?" Dodger nudges Garrett softly. "Our usual place is sorta ritzy, but it's still. Y'know. Chinese food. At least it's nice to look at."

"Archer's paying, so order whatever you want." Augustine laughs - it's rough and low, something unmistakably dangerous.

"That dumbass always offers to foot the bill." Dodger sneers, "Least we'll have leftovers for the next few days."

"I love Chinese food," Garrett answers, a very Hawke glint of mischief in her eyes. "Does this mean I can get the most expensive thing on the menu? I hardly ever get to do that."

She wants to lean over and touch Dodger, to put a hand on his leg or kiss him on the cheek, but feels self-conscious in front of Augustine. Instead, she reaches into her purse and pulls out a cigarette, which she holds out to Dodger.

"Babe?"

"Sure." Dodger grins playfully, lighting her cigarette with a glint in his eyes that says I'm laughing at you in my head. "Atlas does whatever we can to waste Scott Archer's money."

Augustine laughs quietly, "The man's dumb as a brick but he keeps the lights on."

"You'll see what we mean - he's a rich kid, straight to the bone. The money drips off him."

Garrett laughs and puts her absurdly girly cigarette to her lips, more than happy to join in the mockery of the rich.

"Is he the type who wipes his arse with $100 bills and thinks the solution to poverty is just ask your parents for money?" She jokes. "I've met more than a few of those."

"Dodger's like me - grew up on the streets, worked his way up. People like that, you can look at 'em and tell they fought for what they got. We're a different breed."

"Amen."

The car slows and finally parks. Dodger teleports for the first time in a while, and waits outside the car to help Garrett out. In that brief moment without him, Augustine's eyes are blatantly trailing over her body again.

Garrett laughs her agreement with their mockery, chiming in that, "You can always tell the ones who don't know what it's like to have it hard." Then they're parking, and Dodger leaves them.

Augustine is more blatant than anyone she's met before - in her limited experience going out in public as a woman - and it takes her aback a little. It definitely feels performative, like he's deliberately doing it to send a message to the both of them. Garrett avoids his gaze in that brief moment, putting out her cigarette and delicately putting the thing back in its box before extending her hand to Dodger and getting out.

She sticks close by her boyfriend, for now. They all know that Victor has his eye on her, but at least for now she'd like to keep up the pretense that she's actually supposed to be here with Dodger.

"This place looks quite nice," she remarks idly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "I can't wait to spend someone else's money here."

"Everything tastes better when it's free." He grins, pinching her waist playfully as he guides her inside.

The staff seem to know them, and they can walk straight past the line to get in. Augustine walks ahead, and Dodger guides Garrett into a private room divided off by a sliding door. The air inside smells of a thick mix of cigarette smoke (better than Dodger's, at least) and delicious food.

"Augustine, Dodger! Sorry we started a bit without you." Archer is a tall and slender man, blonde and blue-eyed and generally the exact carbon cutout of a White American Male. He's dressed in a pale gold suit, and a red-headed woman in a fancy cocktail dress is draped over his arm.

"Who's your friend?" The woman chimes in, sitting up to let Dodger feign kissing her hand.

"This is Marian Hawke. Marian, these are Scott Archer and Jazzlyn Summers. Archer is a professional investor or some shit-"

"Stock trader and investment broker."

"-Yeah, investment shit, that's what I said. And Jazzlyn's father works for Augustine on weapon design."

"Mr. Archer, Ms. Summers, delighted to meet you," Marian says charmingly, extending her hand to the woman and offering it graciously to the man. "There's no offense at all about starting early, so long as we can have some."

Her eyes rove over the table, taking in foods she doesn't actually recognize but that look pretty damn good. Garrett has no idea what a stock trader is (other than that it's fancy and sometimes involves jumping out of windows), and only has a vague idea of what investment broker might mean, but food and small talk she can always handle. She waits for Dodger to pick a seat and starts to move to follow him, knowing the futility in it even as she takes a step.

Jazzlyn catches her glance and motions for Garrett to sit beside her, followed by a look at Dodger. It takes him a moment, but it clicks and he takes a seat to leave Garrett safely nested between them. Augustine sits between Dodger and Archer, already taking a share to eat. There's still a sense of that anxiety from Augustine being here, but the presence of the other two seems to have calmed Dodger down considerably - there's a bit of his Penance self showing through, the way he was around Squalo and Hector.

"Shame we couldn't get Johnny and Palo here." Archer comments, offering Dodger a beer. "They never visit me."

"Palo would rather blow you than leave Boston." Dodger scoffs, taking it and downing half of it.

While they're chattering, Jazzlyn helpfully fills a plate for Marian with a bit of everything they have at their tables, and offers her a beer as well. "If you don't drink, I can go get you a soda. Also - just call me Jazzlyn."

Dodger makes a comment about their friend sucking Archer's dick and before she can stop herself, Garrett says, "Maybe he should try it."

Then she laughs it off and takes a beer from Jazzlyn, already relaxed and happy at having someone here who gets it. It feels odd to be on the other side of watching women somehow telepathically communicate, but she's grateful. The little squeeze to Dodger's thigh tells him so, as does her relaxed smile.

"Oh, I definitely drink," she assures the other woman. "Are we done ordering, or is this just the appetizers?"

"Just the appetizers for now. Whatever you don't eat, we can make sure gets boxed up for you."

"Just keep the booze flowing and I'll be fine." Dodger grins. The squeeze to his thigh distracts him a little, and he glances questioningly at Garrett - the signal was completely missed, but he appreciates the placement of her hand at least.

"So, Marian-" Archer offers, "It's pretty rare to see one of Dodger's dates. How long have you known him?"

It seems, for now, that Augustine is keeping to himself and letting the others engage. But Dodger leans over to him, and they begin a whispered conversation that's drowned out by the restaurant's music.
