Dodger doesn't stop him, but there's a shiver of anxiety that runs through him when Garrett takes his wrists. He hates the attention, hates any sign of weakness being shown even when he's alone with someone he loves. He hates Garrett having to know how he takes his mental state out on himself.

But the magic is cool and soft, flowing through his skin and into his veins as it reconstructs his skin. The scars are still there, but they're smaller. Older. It almost looks like the cutting was under control, at some point.

He looks back up to Garrett, and his shoulders slump a bit. He sits up, grabbing a napkin from the dispenser beside them and mopping his boyfriend's nose up.

"Don't strain yourself." His voice is surprisingly soft, and gentle. "I don't need you giving yourself an aneurysm over this."

Garrett hums faintly and leans into Dodger's touch, which is warm and gentle enough to soothe the weird buzzing under his skin. He smiles tiredly.

"I'll be alright. It's just mana exhaustion. I might take a little nap against you for a few minutes, but I'll be good as new in half an hour."

He reaches for Dodger's wrist so he can look at it and feel it himself.

"How does it feel?"

Dodger sits back in his chair, and his face turns red at the feeling of Garrett touching his wrist.

"Feels alright." He musters up.

There's a moment of hesitation, and he slowly moves his other hand over Garrett's, encouraging him to stay like this. To keep touching him.

"Take a nap while you can, we'll probably get there in thirty minutes." He runs his thumb idly over the back of Garrett's hand. "Then you can get back to your roots."

Garrett scoots a little closer to Dodger and leans against him. Then he smiles at that unexpectedly soft turn of phrase. "I don't even remember what my roots are anymore. It'll be nice to get back to them."

With that, he fades off to sleep, head tucked against Dodger's shoulder. The man's heartbeat is enormously soothing, and so much more calming than the staccato thrum of a speedster's heart could ever be. After about 20 minutes, he wakes up with an enormous yawn, stretching and looking around at his boyfriend.

"Are we there? How long has it been?"

"I was about to start nudging you. The next stop is ours."

Dodger extracts himself from Garrett, and gets up to stretch his legs. It had been cozy to let the older man lay on him, but Dodger can't bring himself to fully relax anywhere that isn't padlocked and guarded with explosives.

Even though they haven't quite reached the station, it already smells of farmland. Cow manure, grass clippings and the general scent of livestock. The farms are too far from the track to see, but they can hear the occasion moo or dogs barking.

"Never been this far out before." Dodger mutters, already feeling like a fish out of water.

Garrett follows Dodger in standing, stretching his own legs while looking out the opposite windows of Dodger. Contrary to his boyfriend, the familiar smell of country air assaults him with memories from years and years ago.

"Maker's tits," he breathes, taking in the familiar-unfamiliarity of rolling countryside with wonder. "I haven't seen farmland in over a year."

Dodger lets out a small snort of laughter, mostly at the weird ass curses Garrett comes up with. He has to grab onto the seat beside him when the train starts to slow, and honestly, he isn't looking forward to rejoining the crowd. He's ready to go home.

"I've, uh. Never seen a farm in person. Augustine usually needs me to stay in the city."

His phone buzzes, and he checks his phone. Augustine is asking questions, and he needs his notes at home to answer them. Knowing full well the boss won't understand, he just stashes his phone back in his pocket. He'll suffer the consequences later.

"Let's head out before I change my mind." He says, already with cold feet.

Garrett just catches Dodger checking his phone out of the corner of his eye and turns to face him. He knows the man has responsibilities, and that his boss reacts severely to being ignored.

"Hey." He takes Dodger's hand and tugs him towards the exit . "It's quieter out in the country. You'll see."

Dodger nods slowly, and lets Garrett lead him out of the train. The station is rather run-down, and everyone shuffles off to their cars or the bus stop without much fuss. Dodger takes a deep breath and relaxes a little, finally feeling safe enough to walk close to Garrett and hold his hand. Or more specifically, feeling like he needs the safety of Garrett's presence.

"Should be some farmland past this parking lot. Could be a while before we actually see anything interesting though."

He's silent for a moment.

"I've never been this far out of the city."

Garrett laces their fingers together and tugs Dodger a little closer so they can watch shoulder to shoulder. He's not bothered by the run down station- it feels more like Kirkwall or Ferelden without all the shine. Looking around also reveals a place surrounded by shitty cars with a sign saying "rental" somewhere in its name. Garrett doesn't really know what to make of it, but he nudged Dodger anyway.

"Can we get a car there? And just drive around until we find some cows?" He squeezes Dodger's hand. "I'll suck you off while we drive."

He cracks a smile, and squeezes Garrett's hand gently. "You always know how to sweeten a deal."

Off to the rental place. Dodger immediately lets go of Garrett's hand and switches his ring on to hide his mutations. There's a woman manning the front desk, currently working on her computer. Dodger leans casually on the desk.

"Need a car."

"Sure. Do you have a valid driver's license?"

"Yeah, right here." Dodger pretends to search his pockets, before very casually placing a pistol on the counter.

The woman is already reaching to take a license, and she freezes. Her gaze slides up to him, and her face pales.

"Right- right away, sir. Did you have a model in mind?"

"Whatever gets the job done. We're going on dirt roads, that's all it needs to do."

Garrett is expecting the woman to get weird upon seeing Dodger's license, but he absolutely fucking does not expect the man to pull a fucking gun on her. His eyes go slightly wide and he takes out his wallet.

"How much? The normal price, please."

He's not sure how to make Dodger put away the gun, but he can at least try to avoid outright armed robbery.

Dodger waves him off with a hand, shooting him a very quick, sharp look.

"I can cover the cost. You'll have my credit card on file, no need for things to get complicated."

The woman purses her lips, and her hands shake as she moves back to her computer. The price is reasonable and the car is old, but serviceable. Dodger pays for it, takes the keys and slides his gun back into it's holster, and pauses to look the woman over.

"Get a lower cut shirt. Those tits should get shown off."

If Garrett doesn't follow him, Dodger will tug on his shoulder to get him going as he leaves.

While Dodger is busy being an asshole, Garrett subtly and quietly pulls a $100 bill from his wallet and puts the wallet back in his pocket. Right before leaving, when Dodger tugs on his shirt, Garrett slides the hundred across the counter at her without a word.

Once they're outside, he gets into whatever car Dodger indicates and quietly says, "When we stop, I'm going to punch you in the face."

Dodger notices Garrett bribing the woman, but just puts it aside for now. He just rolls his eyes, waiting until they're headed to the car to argue.

"Why? I got us a car. Neither of us have a license, we don't have the option to do it legally."

"You didn't have to steal and make a comment about her tits," he fires back. "Were you trying to ruin her day as much as possible, or did it just come naturally?"

Garrett lets himself into the car and sighs heavily, leaning against the window.

Dodger slams the door a little harder than necessary as he enters the driver's side, but doesn't start the car. He just sits there, grumbling and then turning to glare at Garrett.

"Don't be a bitch. I took you out here to calm you down, do I need to change everything about how I act to make you comfortable?"

Garrett can admit that there's probably a point hidden somewhere in there, but he still fires back a retort.

"Avoiding armed robbery on a date is a pretty reasonable standard, don't you think?"

"Your friends back home were criminals and refugees. I kill people for money, and you've killed me for no fucking reason. You're going to have to wrap your head around the fact that sometimes things have to be done the hard way. I'd rather threaten someone with an empty gun than waste the entire day arguing with her until we have to go home without seeing any fucking cows or whatever the fuck you want."

His breath is coming out hot enough to make heat waves, but when he notices he just angrily puts the AC on to counteract it.

Garrett listen to the entire outburst, getting temporarily stuck on the no reason bit. But the rest of it is more or less reasonable- he is a criminal and a murderer, even if he spent years trying to repress that part of himself for the sake of someone better than him. And Dodger is very clearly out of his comfort zone here.

There's a period of silence after Dodger's rant ends. A minute before Garrett speaks again.

"You have an interesting definition of no reason." Then he sighs and looks over at Dodger, brows furrowed but tone a little lighter. "I guess being with a straight-laced hero type who loves cops got to me more than I thought. My friends from home would be so disappointed in me."

Dodger opens his mouth to argue further, but just closes it and sets his jaw bitterly. He starts the car, and starts to pull out of the parking spot while he offers another jab.

"Sorry I'm not him."

"That's not what I meant," he says, a little bemused. There's a tinge of frustration at Dodger's jealousy, but he also knows that he hasn't made it easy on the man, being hung up on an idealized version of his lost love. "It was just sharing my thoughts about why I've gotten so uptight."

Because not wanting to commit armed robbery is definitely uptight. Yes.

"After needing to repress that side of myself for so long, it started to sink in. But Barry didn't have to deal with the bullshit that mutants and mages do. I've sort of forgotten what that kind of life is like. Until now, at least."

Well... It's a fair point. Dodger knows plenty about having to repress himself, about needing to be soft and kind hearted and never letting someone see the sick twisted monster hiding in his veins.

"Pulling out a gun isn't the end of the world."

At least he isn't fighting anymore.

"I'll return the car when we're done and I'll pay for it. Even if she tries to go to the cops, they won't touch me."

He opens his window, and shuffles in his pocket for a cigarette. Which makes him veer dangerously to the side.

When the gigantic contraption hurtling down the road at unnatural speeds swerves almost off the fucking road, Garrett lets out a high-pitched scream.

"DODGER," he yelps, making as if to grab the wheel before thinking better of it.
