"Farms?" Something clears in his expression- almost like wonder, but too detached. "Maker's breath, I can't even remember the last time I saw a farm."

He leans his head forward to rest against Dodger's. "Fuck, I can't remember the last time I saw fields. Or hills. Or real grass that someone didn't plant for dogs to piss on."

Well, that settles it. The relief in Garrett's voice pulls at Dodger's heart, in a way that little else has in a long while.

"Alright." He sighs softly, hugging Garrett again and breathing in his scent before drawing back, "Come on, I'll show you how to get to the subway. We'll take it to the train station, should be able to get a train down to the countryside."

There's a bit more hesitation as he removes himself from Garrett. His hand raises, hovers a bit, before he offers to hold Garrett's.

Somehow, the hesitation makes Dodger's gesture all the sweeter. Garrett reaches out and takes his hand, looking almost surprised at the open display of affection. It's nice. Reminiscent of times long gone, and not something he ever expected to feel even a shadow of with this man.

Strange, the places life has taken him.

"Alright. As long as you're here to protect me from the big bad scary train, I think I'll be alright."

"Fuck off."

An hour passes. They've made it to the train station in one piece, although Dodger gets visibly uncomfortable the more crowded things get. The affection stopped once they were on the subway, and Dodger has been keeping a polite distance from Garrett like he usually does. Out here he doesn't bother hiding his tail, fully aware that people recognize him even if he hides the demonic features. Some people are even bold enough to stare, or whisper about him. He's used to it, but it still digs in a little.

Dodger moves away a little too eagerly when the train pulls in, leaving Garrett to hurry behind him. But eventually they find a seat in a quiet car, that coincidentally empties out when people see that Jamie Dodger is on the train. Even if it bothers him, he can't deny that it's nice to have space to himself. Space to be with Garrett on his own terms.

"It's gonna be a while before we get there. Try not to fall asleep."

Garrett is honestly a little uncomfortable seeing the way people react to Dodger. In the scant few weeks he's been here, he's definitely noticed that his boyfriend is a wanted criminal. It's not that Garrett is a stranger to dating wanted outlaws, but Anders was never accused of the kinds of things Dodger has attached to his name. As hard as he's tried not to think about it, it's impossible to miss when people openly flee at the sight of them.

"Put your ring on," he replies, somewhat nettled. Dodger is wearing it, but it isn't adjusted to the setting that would hide the mutations. "This is a little too open for my liking."

"It's not going to change anything, everyone knows who I am."

But for Garrett's comfort, he begrudgingly slides his ring into place, and shivers as his teeth and tail retreat into his body. Not exactly painful, but definitely uncomfortable. Almost as soon as they're gone he feels like he's missing a part of his body - if nothing else, it's almost comforting to think people might be staring at his tail instead of his face.

"Open-carrying a mutation you can hide is a problem around here. But no one is going to question me." He says that almost like it's comforting, as if the ticketmaster who walked through their cabin hadn't visibly picked up speed after meeting Dodger's eyes.

Dodger had bragged every so often about his reputation in Hell, but in times like these it's rather obvious how much he dislikes it. In public he's much quieter than at home, and even now that they're alone his eyes keep scanning the car as if he's expecting someone to be watching him.

Garrett watched Dodger closely while trying to be subtle about it, taking in the man's body language and obvious discomfort.

"You never saw what my scar looked like before Anders healed it," he remarks casually. "It was massive and gnarled, pulling on the skin and healed wrong. But he was an incredible healer and made it as smooth and shiny as it is today."

Dodger glances up at Garrett, giving him a measured look. Something tells him Garrett is trying to comfort him, but he tells himself he doesn't need it. Even if he's still fiddling uncomfortably with his ring.

"It would've looked nice like that." He mumbles. "I like it now. But I like large scars."

"My friends tried to tell me that carrying the mark of a great battle was an honor," Garrett answers. "They were right- it was a great battle that saved the city. But I hated how it looked. Every time I looked at myself with my shirt off, I hated what I saw."

He tries to make it sound like this is just about him. Not about Dodger at all. But there's no disguising the next bit.

"It's alright, though. Turns out that healing magic, with enough practice, can heal even really old scars."

If there was anywhere to go, Dodger would pick this time to just get up and leave. But he knows he has nowhere else to be, and that makes it all the more uncomfortable. So instead when he speaks, his voice comes out as a sharp snap.

"I don't need my scars healed."

He's not looking at Garrett anymore, instead glaring out the window at the trees zooming past.

Dodger is being snappy again, but Garrett doesn't mind. He knows he's poking at something very sensitive. They've never talked about it, but he's picked up how much the other man is bothered by his appearance. Secretly, Garrett wonders how much of his slovenly nature and refusal to put effort into his wardrobe is tied to insecurity about his face.

"I know. Neither did I." He takes out his phone to look at a notification, which turns out to be some stupid app he hasn't deleted yet. "But I wanted it, and Anders did it because he loved me. Just something to keep in mind, if you want."

Now that glare turns to Garrett, and Dodger bristles openly. He switches his ring off, letting his teeth sharpen and his tail lash aggressively.

"Stop taking pity on me, you know that pisses me off."

Garrett just stares back, unruffled.

"When you brought me here, were you taking pity on me, or doing it because you love me and wanted to see me happy?"

Sometimes it's hot that Garrett doesn't back down or cower when Dodger gets angry. Other times, like now, it's infuriating. His fingers start to tap on the table, and wicked, hooked claws sprout from the tips.

"I'm not permanently altering your body by taking you to see some fucking cows."

Garrett almost says something stupid but catches himself just in time. "You're lucky I'm not telling you to watch your attitude or threatening to send you to your room without supper."

Ha ha funny.

"It was just an offer, Jamie. You don't have to do anything you don't want to do."

Something flashes in his eyes at that comment. A hint of arousal breaking through that anger. Stupid fucking boyfriend and his sexy daddy vibes.

"Go fuck yourself, daddy."

He slumps back against his seat, tail still lashing while he pulls out his cigarettes and lights one. At least he has the decency to lean up and crack the window open.

"My scars are part of who I am. Even if I didn't have them, I'm never going to fit in here. So what's the fucking point."

Even without the scars, without the mutations, without the tattoos. His face has been plastered all over the media for two years. He's built up a reputation among the elites in the business world, people who could rope him right back in if Augustine let him go. He made the decision - even if he was tripping balls when he did - to rise up above his station and now he's stuck up here at the top.

He misses being in a prison world.

Well, that little flash of arousal certainly is interesting. The fact that it could break through the wall of fury even now... Garrett files that tidbit away for later.

"That's fine," he answers mildly. "I'm not going to hold you down and force the nurturing miracle of healing magic down your throat. I just thought I'd offer- for any of the scars, not just the ones on your face. But if you don't want it, that's okay. It doesn't bother me. I like how you look- I just want you to like it, too."

Despite his best attempts, Dodger has always been weak to Garrett's charms. He slowly starts to simmer down, looking more frustrated than angry.

"I look fine."

Nothing like the bravado he usually shows off, the sleek and preening predator he portrays when he's in control of the room. He's not hot or irresistible, or too cute to be angry at. Just fine.

He gazes out the window again, trying to will his face to stop turning red. His tail is still lashing, but it's starting to slow.

"I suppose you want to get rid of all the crap on my wrists, huh?"

That answer is both unconvincing and concerning. It's obvious that Dodger hates his own appearance in this regard, and Garrett wishes sincerely that he could do something to make it better. But he takes the change of topic, since it's an opening Dodger is giving willingly.

"If I had to start somewhere, I think that would be it," he nods. "It would be nice to give you your tattoos back."

Dodger hesitates before slowly placing his hands on the table. Claws retracted, close enough that Garrett could take them or even touch his wrists if he wanted to.

"Squalo really ripped them to shit."

He's been trying to get used to the sight of them without bandages, but he really only keeps them off so others can hold him accountable if there are any fresh cuts. The skin is scarred and warped from hundreds of bite marks, to the point where only a few newer lines are visible through the absolute mess. Garrett has likely noticed before that the skin feels unnatural, hard and smooth from all the crisscrossing scar tissue. The only thing that keeps it from being obvious from afar is the tattoos.

"I miss that dumb fuck."

Garrett takes Dodger's hands and turns them over, baring the man's wrists to the world. He doesn't get many chances to examine them closely, given how self-conscious Dodger is and how often he wears bandages, so this is interesting. Yes, the mass of scar tissue is something he's noticed, but now he's getting a better chance to take a real look under good light.

It only takes him a moment to come to a conclusion.

"Hold still," he says, reaching into his pocket.

Garrett produces a pocket knife that he (hypocritically) uses to slice his own wrist, taking care not to let the blood well up too much. Before it has a chance to run down to the table, he captures the power with his mind, weaving it into his magic. The power of blood adds tremendous force to the magic he starts to pour into Dodger's wrists, and Garrett (being relatively new to healing and magical study) needs all the help he can get. It takes a while, and he has a slight nosebleed by the end of it, but he manages to ease the scars up until it looks like skin again. It's skin crisscrossed with thin cuts, but it's still recognizable like human skin and feels natural to the touch.

He sits back in his chair, exhausted.

Dodger doesn't stop him, but there's a shiver of anxiety that runs through him when Garrett takes his wrists. He hates the attention, hates any sign of weakness being shown even when he's alone with someone he loves. He hates Garrett having to know how he takes his mental state out on himself.

But the magic is cool and soft, flowing through his skin and into his veins as it reconstructs his skin. The scars are still there, but they're smaller. Older. It almost looks like the cutting was under control, at some point.

He looks back up to Garrett, and his shoulders slump a bit. He sits up, grabbing a napkin from the dispenser beside them and mopping his boyfriend's nose up.

"Don't strain yourself." His voice is surprisingly soft, and gentle. "I don't need you giving yourself an aneurysm over this."

Garrett hums faintly and leans into Dodger's touch, which is warm and gentle enough to soothe the weird buzzing under his skin. He smiles tiredly.

"I'll be alright. It's just mana exhaustion. I might take a little nap against you for a few minutes, but I'll be good as new in half an hour."

He reaches for Dodger's wrist so he can look at it and feel it himself.

"How does it feel?"

Dodger sits back in his chair, and his face turns red at the feeling of Garrett touching his wrist.

"Feels alright." He musters up.

There's a moment of hesitation, and he slowly moves his other hand over Garrett's, encouraging him to stay like this. To keep touching him.

"Take a nap while you can, we'll probably get there in thirty minutes." He runs his thumb idly over the back of Garrett's hand. "Then you can get back to your roots."

Garrett scoots a little closer to Dodger and leans against him. Then he smiles at that unexpectedly soft turn of phrase. "I don't even remember what my roots are anymore. It'll be nice to get back to them."

With that, he fades off to sleep, head tucked against Dodger's shoulder. The man's heartbeat is enormously soothing, and so much more calming than the staccato thrum of a speedster's heart could ever be. After about 20 minutes, he wakes up with an enormous yawn, stretching and looking around at his boyfriend.

"Are we there? How long has it been?"
