Garrett sighs in turn and scratches the ears of whatever dog head just shoved into his lap.

"And everything about me is... look, you need to understand."

So he explains. About his group of friends and how integrated they were with each other's lives, how even when they had jobs or causes (like Anders) that need to be private, they still played cards and met the important people who counted as friends and not just secret contacts. How they drank and played cards together even with the ones they clashed with. How Hawke didn't know his friends' business necessarily, they kept secrets and had privacy of their own, but he and Anders weren't just boyfriends in private- but in public, too.

"And I mean, he ended up using his secrets to lie to me, use me, and blow up half the city, but that's neither here nor there," he finishes. "I like to think that I would have been less angry if I knew and was able to actually help with his cause, but that might just be wishful thinking. Um. Anyway. That's why I can't just... never see any of your life and still feel like I'm a part of it. It feels really closed-off and strangled."

Dodger listens, but he still has that vaguely annoyed look on his face. He gets it. That's sort of how his friend group is - they don't talk business when they hang out, just play cards and talk shit at each other. There's a bond there that comes from leaving their station at the door.

"I really hate you comparing me to your exes." He finally mutters, but he's still taking the time to process it all.

He chews his cheek, and finally gives a proper response.

"I still don't see why I need to be the one changing my shit around. Being uncomfortable for your sake. But fine. If it's that important to you, I'll take you along the next time I meet up with my friends."

His expression warms and his eyes light up with cautious hope. "Really? I'd love that."

After leaning in for a quick cheek kiss, Garrett settles back and gives his boyfriend an apologetic look. "Sorry, love, I wasn't trying to compare you to Anders. I'm just sort of used to mentally comparing mutants and mages whenever you used to talk about your world. The oppression and struggle for rights and all that."

Dodger lets out a bothered little sigh through his nose, but he moves closer to snuggle against Garrett, and slide his legs up into Garrett's lap.

"I keep telling you it's not magic." He grumbles, taking the cigarette from his lips so he can lean his head on Garrett's shoulder.

"Hey. Before you come along, I need to let you in on a couple things so you don't get weird about it. Palo's missing an arm, I don't want you calling attention to it. And we've got a couple rules when we play cards - we don't talk about work, we don't use names of anyone outside the room, and we don't teach each other how to play games." He leans back, and smirks softly. "None of us know how to play. It's fun that way."

Garrett draws Dodger in closer and wraps an arm around him, finally giving in to his own need for affection now that he's gotten the assurance he needed of... well, of something more. It feels nice. Hearing names, being actually included with the promise of meeting people... he's really hoping this isn't a ruse.

"If you don't know how to play, then how do you know when someone's cheating? That's the kind of shit that gets people killed."

Gambling is serious business in Kirkwall.

"We don't need cards to kill each other." That puts a weak smile on his face, and he finishes off his cigarette before stubbing it out against his own pants and tossing it onto the floor. "Anyway, we don't bet money. Just some chips we keep at the restaurant, we divvy them up equally every time. Keeps things fair between us."

He pauses, and cocks his head.

"I've never talked about my friends, have I."

"No, and you've never learned how to use an ashtray, either," he snarks, pushing Dodger's legs off his lap unceremoniously. "Pick that shit up, I raised you better."

Yes, he's making those jokes. No, he's not sorry.

He lets out another quiet huff as he's pushed off, but each time the annoyed sounds have a little less heat behind them. "Yes, daddy." he mutters as he gets up to grab the stub and toss it onto the ashtray on the end table.

Dodger turns back to Garrett, and comes back over to slide onto his lap - straddling him this time, but keeping enough space that it isn't overtly sexual. His arms sling around Garrett's shoulders, and he watches the man's face carefully.

"There's four people I meet up with. I've got other people I hang around, but those four are the ones I like keeping near me. Palo was working for Augustine before me, sorta taught me the ropes. Johnny's the fresh meat, but he followed me around like a duckling 'til I got used to having him around. We meet up with Archer and Summers, two of Augustine's investors that we all took a liking to. They're sleeping together, that back room's the only place they can have their hands on each other. It's a safe space, I suppose."

A pause.

"It's been nice to have Palo back. Squalo always reminded me of him."

Garrett swats at Dodger lightly in retaliation for the daddy comment, but there's no real heat behind it. In truth, it doesn't really matter- especially when he soon gets a lap full of Dodger. His hands settle on the younger man's hips to watch him and listen.

It's nice hearing about Dodger's friends. Finally, it feels like Dodger is letting him in- for real, not just as a toy to play with or a little wife to keep barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. The little details make him smile, as does the image of an American one-armed Squalo.

"Do they look alike? Or do they share equally powerful opinions about pasta?"

He thinks on it for a moment. "They're italian, they both have shark teeth. That's about where it ends."

Which is a flat-out lie. They might not have the same face, but they share the same expressions - the same coked-out look of barely-contained insanity in the eyes.

"The friends I had in Hell always made me a little homesick. Made me think of being back here, fucking around with those chucklefucks until Augustine called one of us away for something. They're the only ones that don't look at me like I'm a monster on a leash."

"I sort of know how you feel." Ish. If he squints. "It's hard to be judgmental when you pal around with criminals and blood mages. You know, who's going to win the moral high ground- the guy who's literally possessed, or the one who ripped a man's heart from his chest? You can't expect normal people to treat you the same after learning that, but we were all crazy enough to fit well together."

Garrett's thumbs are rubbing gentle circles in Dodger's hips in a slow, mindlessly affectionate gesture.

"You kept trying to start a gang in Hell- are you their leader here? Wouldn't that be Augustine?"

"I just wanted a piece of home." He shrugs. "I didn't want to be the leader, if a gang started. That's just sort of where I ended up fitting in."

He ruminates for a moment before continuing, leaning a little into Garrett's touch and slowly relaxing.

"There's people here that want me to take over. People that think I should carry on the torch if Augustine croaks. But I never wanted to be a leader, and I'm never going to. That's half of why I ditched the gang I grew up in. I believe in fighting for a cause, but not from the front lines. That's not where the real difference gets made."

Another pause.

"Anyway, it's not like that. They're sorta like the ambassadors of different parts of the gang, right? And I'm Augustine's right-hand man. They report to me, more or less, I report to him."

Garrett nods along, still touching gently and enjoying the closeness. It's nice to get more insight about Dodger's life and inner workings when they both have their clothes on.

"So would you take up the weapon-making?" He doesn't know terminology leave him alone. "If the people who follow you got their batshit crazy wish, I mean."

He says "batshit crazy" with a fond, slightly teasing smile.

"It's not something I'd personally want to handle." He chews his cheek. "Augustine's side of things is a lot of talking to investors, managing factories and clients. The arms-dealing makes good money, but it gives me a headache. If I took things over, I'd hire someone else to be the shiny front end."

He almost looks annoyed that Garrett has him thinking about it.

"What is there other than the arms dealing? You were always pretty vague."

Garrett's thumbs are making little patterns on Dodger's hips now.

"Or you can keep telling me about your band of shitbags if you'd rather. I say that with the utmost respect."

That gets an amuse snort out of him, and one of his hands slides down to slowly massage over Garrett's chest.

"Why do you suddenly care about my life so much?"

Some paranoid, misfiring brain cell wonders if Garrett is wearing a wire. His brows twitch with the beginning of a suspicious expression, but he pushes the thought aside.

"I don't understand the business end of Augustine's shit very well. It's never been my area of expertise. I just do what he tells me to do."

Garrett brings one hand up to flick Dodger on the nose.

"I care about your life because I'm part of it. Isn't that reason enough?" He sighs slightly and tilts his head thoughtfully at his lover.

The flick makes him sneeze lightly, and he wipes his nose with a grumble before leaning forward to kiss Garrett.

"You were already a part of it. Dad."

"Yes, but now I'm actually here." He leans up for another kiss, short and sweet. "Participating instead of just hearing about it from across universes."

His hands move down Dodger's sides, once more gently gripping the man's hips in a possessive, affectionate touch.

"I've known you for years, but this is the first time I'm ever hearing about your friends. Can you blame me for being curious about everything?"

Dodger hums softly at Garrett's touch, and slides forward to mold himself against the older man. His hands move up to slide his fingers slowly through Garrett's hair.

"'Friends' has always been a strong word for them. They weren't important when I wasn't around them."

He steals another kiss, then a slightly deeper one.

"You just said-" is all Garrett manages before Dodger's mouth covers his own.

And... well. This is nice. The hand in his hair feels really, really good, and he's not inclined to make it stop. He is, in fact, inclined to lean up into that kiss, his lips parted and tongue slipping out to gently brush Dodger's lips and seek entrance. It's a little deeper but still soft, as uncertain as this new change in the air between them.

Usually, these changes are demanded rather than offered. They turn harsh and demanding, often Dodger pins Garrett to the wall or shoves him to the floor. He definitely isn't feeling that this time. His kisses stay soft and tentative, even as he opens his mouth and lets his tongue slide against Garrett's. His breath comes out in soft little sighs between their lips, and he presses just a little closer as the affection continues.

For Garrett, the change in the air is what's changed between them. Garrett moving out and their dynamic shifting under their feet like sand. Nothing feels certain with the truth serum still clanging in his memory, and in a way this kiss is seeking reassurance against his doubts. Little sighs and soft exhales, tongues sliding together so gently, almost shy as this slow, delicate thing continues.

There's a hand in his hair still, and his own spreads wide over the small of Dodger's back. It keeps him close when Garrett finally has to come up for air, so they don't lose the warmth.

"You promise you aren't just... pretending to plan, right?" He makes it sound like a joke, but there's real worry. Garrett would like to be able to trust him.

His instinct, when Garrett breaks away to speak, is to cut him off with another kiss. Can't they just escape the weight of this new development for a while? A flicker of impatience runs through him, but he doubts it would do him any good to voice it. Instead he presses his forehead against Garrett's, with a gravelly sigh.

"Would I be telling you about them if I was still gonna hide you from them?"

He leans back, enough to scan Garrett's face while he speaks.

"They don't know anything about you. They barely know about Jason - but bringing you there is gonna make word spread to him, 'cause he's Augustine's too. This is a big thing I'm doing for you, I need you to realize that."

Garrett leans his head against Dodger's for a moment then settles back and listens. As Dodger talks, he realizes that the man is serious - and hits him with that little tidbit that changes everything.

"Oh." His hand rubs Dodger's back idly. "Well, thank you in advance for all the hysterics you're willing to endure for me."
