The second that cold water hits his skin, Garrett makes a strangled noise and adjusts the temperature. He's become a bit of a princess about it since leaving Thedas, and never wants to go back to the days before hot showers. He will at least compromise down to "lukewarm," but the cold just makes him shiver miserably.

Once the water is fine, though, he honestly doesn't care about the blood. Washing it off feels routine. How many times has he washed blood from his skin before?

"Showers would have made washing up after battle a lot easier back home," he remarks while slowly working up a red, soapy lather on his legs.

That comment finally pulls Dodger from his daze, and he lets out a soft, gravelly laugh. Still not looking at Garrett, but he starts to slowly work on lathering his chest.

"Beats having to drain and fill a bath seven times." His voice is quieter than he intended, and he pauses a moment before speaking again. "I usually clean myself up. Pretty rare to have help, so... uh. I mean, it's nice to have company."

He finally looks at Garrett, but not at his face. He's looking at the man's body, checking for any signs of injury or weakness that he can help with. Almost like he needs to make up for trespassing.

"You only think it's nice because I haven't started washing my ass yet."

There's only one injury anywhere on Garrett's body- the deep scratches on his thighs, that he's currently in the process of healing. The light on his skin does funny things to the blood-swirled soap lather, and Garrett stares at it for a bit, enchanted by the light playing through the bubbles.

That gets a proper laugh out of Dodger, and it's the first proper smile he's cracked since he gave in to his urges.

"I'll admire it while I can, then."

And he is admiring. The light reflecting in the soap bubbles is sort of mesmerizing, in a totally different way than the blood. Dodger tips his head, and slowly reaches out to run his hand over Garrett's back. It's a light and affectionate touch, gentle despite the rough and calloused skin.

"You really are beautiful, y'know."

Garrett makes a small sound under his breath and leans into the touch. It's surprisingly gentle to accompany words that sink in slowly, but get Dodger a faintly surprised look.

"I think that's the first time you've ever said anything like that outside of bed."

Genuine, caring compliments like that. The kind of open affection and adoration he hasn't felt since... All of a sudden, his chest feels tight.

"We don't spend much time with our clothes on." He smirks wryly, running his fingers along Garrett's jaw.

He moves closer, guiding his lover down to give him a soft kiss on the lips. When he leans back, his gaze scans over Garrett's face with thinly veiled worry.

"Are you sure you're okay?"

"Yeah, I'm sure," he says, confidently incorrect. "It's just been a long time since I've done anything even half that intense."

Garrett gives Dodger a stupid kiss right on the nose, then turns back to the distractingly not-hot water to dip his head under. It's his second pass with the shampoo, and he takes the chance to complain, "Did you really have to pull my hair while covered in that many body fluids?"

Not that he minded at the time. At all.

Dodger grins at the kiss, and his hands stay on Garrett's body. Right now, he really just wants to be close. To fuss over him, because he knows all too well that Garrett will always say he's okay, no matter what he's feeling.

"Here." He mumbles, offering to help Garrett with shampoo and pulling apart the more stubborn clumps of bloody hair.

Whether he's allowed or not, he's still going to speak with that soft and concerned voice. "You like me pulling your hair. That's all I was thinking about."

The touching is appreciated, honestly. Garrett obligingly sinks down and rests a knee on the little seat in the corner of the shower, so Dodger can easily get hands into his hair. He closes his eyes and tips his head back, enjoying the touch.

"You were thinking with your dick," he answers. It isn't a judgmental tone, just distantly teasing. "Good thing I never do that."

Another laugh, and Dodger tugs lightly on Garrett's hair. "Yeah, sure."

The smell of blood is fading, and it's slowly being replaced with Dodger's cinnamon-scented shampoo and a scent that's unmistakeably Garrett. It's a pleasant mixture, and Dodger unconsciously leans closer as he massages the older man's scalp.

"Think I'm gonna hold off on shit like this for a while. It was uh..."

A lot.

"Do you wanna watch a movie or something? Once we get out?"

Garrett leans into Dodger's hands with a faint sigh. It feels really... really good. Maybe not enough to make everything that's happened go away, but in this moment things are pleasant enough to not feel quite so dark.

"That sounds nice. Maybe we can even get through a whole movie this time."

Dodger's hands travel down, to slide his fingers over Garrett's chest. He presses them in experimentally, but those claws don't slip out. He isn't even sure if that was real or a hallucination. Another side effect of the headaches.

He follows through with the motion, though, so he can wrap his arms around Garrett and hold him loosely.

"I love you."

He leans back until he's touching Dodger's body and rests his head against one of Dodger's thick arms. That little press of nails catches his attention, too, but he's just as concerned with soaking up Dodger's affection.

"Me too." Or something. "I think you clawed me. Do you have claws now?"

He shouldn't read too much into it, but not hearing those words from Garrett hurts. It aches in a new and particular way, after hearing it so many times during sex.

It sticks in his mind hard enough that he almost misses what Garrett does say. He makes a noncommittal little noise, and lifts his hands slightly to examine them.

"I don't know." An honest answer. "Felt like it, but... not anymore. I didn't have them in Hell."

He leans down to rest his chin on Garrett's head, and slumps onto him.

"Shouldn't keep changing if we're not there anymore, right?"

Garrett just has trouble coughing up the L word sometimes. He's never really had to deal with that tendency, because neither of the people he said it to ever really called him out on it. They knew his particular dysfunction well enough to look to his actions more than his words. So it doesn't register that he doesn't say the word back, just that he meant to. He said something with the same intent.

When Dodger slumps against him, Garrett leans into the weight. He reaches up to run his own fingernails lightly over Dodger's arms, raking over smooth skin and scar tissue alike with the same gentleness as he thinks. It's a good question that leads to extremely alarming thoughts.

"Maybe you were getting close to growing them right when you left."

At least, that's what he desperately wants to believe.

Similar unsettling thoughts are running through Dodger's mind, and he's quiet for a moment while he mulls them over. But, like many things, he decides to process them later, alone.

"We should finish up before the hot water runs out." He murmurs, and stands back up to focus on washing his own hair.

Unconsciously, he keeps running his fingers over the spot where Garrett had bitten him. He isn't sure why... Maybe because it was the same spot that Frank had gored years ago. Maybe just because the idea of being ripped apart is intensely sexual and intimate to him. In any case, he hasn't noticed just how much he's touching it.

Garrett goes back to washing himself, conditioning his hair, scrubbing anywhere that still has blood. Towards the end, he glances over at Dodger and says, "You haven't bottomed enough lately to remember how this goes, so don't judge how incredibly sexy I'm about to look."

Then he lifts his leg up on the seat in a Captain Morgan pose, grabs the showerhead, and aims the stream of water right at his asshole.

Dodger glances back at him and laughs openly, even if there's a bit of color filling into his face.

"Trust me, I remember. I used to... Uh." Mumble mumble. "I was really into it, when I was a teenager."

Understatement. He doesn't know why he still feels embarrassed about anything, when they've been forced to share so much with each other since they met.

"I know," Garrett replies fondly. He can't see Dodger's face, but the blush is as clear as day in the younger man's tone. "Hopefully you'll be getting more into it, if we keep having days like yesterday."

After some soaping, Garrett rinses, puts the showerhead back, and washes his hands to finish things off. Then it's time to start rinsing out the conditioner, and he's feeling loads better already. Fresh and clean, like a person again.

"We'll see... But I'm looking forward to it."

Dodger steps out of the shower while Garrett is still finishing up, already satisfied which how clean he is. Although he still stops in front of the mirror to fluff his hair up, apply some deodorant and beard oil, and scrutinize his appearance. Idly, he wonders when the last time was that he was satisfied with how he looks.

Nope. Putting that thought back in the drawer.

"I'm gonna pick something to watch. Don't take too long, yeah?"

"I'll need a few minutes," he fires back, "While you clean up the bedroom."

Because, yeah. There's a lot to deal with in there, and Garrett has things to deal with in here.

Dodger doesn't answer, but he figures Garrett has a point. He teleports out, and spends some time focusing on the bloodstains all over the floor. They're not the first and they won't be the last, and Dodger is well-versed in helping to clean up his own messes, so it doesn't take long to erase the evidence of their lapse in judgement.

By the time Garrett gets out of the bathroom, Dodger is still in the bedroom. Done cleaning, but staring at himself in the door mirror and fussing with his clothing. He opted for a well-worn band T-shirt and a pair of boxers with "suck it" across the front, but somehow he isn't satisfied with it. Unsatisfied, but unsure what would be better. Maybe it's just easier to focus on his clothing than his face.

His fingers are pressing into that spot again.

It takes Garrett a few minutes to come out again: after using blood as lube, he feels the need to be much more thorough even than his usual fastidiousness in getting clean. He doesn't emerge until he's completely satisfied. By the time he comes out, his hair is almost dry, too.

He frowns a little at the sight of Dodger, and crosses the room to stand behind his lover.

"Hands off," he chides gently, wrapping his arms around the shorter man. His own hands slide down to cover Dodger's, so he can carefully separate the man's favorite injury spot from potential claws. "Let's watch TV in bed. I want more room to cuddle."

Dodger submits immediately to Garrett's hold, relaxing into him as if it's the most natural thing he knows. He leans back into his lover, shifting to look at him when he speaks but not saying much himself.

"Yeah."

He breaks away from Garrett to crawl into bed, and searches around for the remote to the bedroom TV. It's rarely used, mostly because Dodger tends to only use his bedroom for work, sex or sleep. Half of the time he forgets he owns it.

"Here, you might like this one." He starts searching up some old movie from the 40s, a film noire that hits every stereotype right on the head. Nearly a hundred years old now, but he's always loved antique media.

While crossing the room to the bed, Garrett steps over something on the floor- a burnt length of red silk rope, still wet with blood. It sticks with him as he slides under the sheets, the bright red vivid in his mind against the white fabric. Strange, the little things that can get to him- but he tries to put it out of his mind. As Dodger said, it was a lot. It feels weird and too big to think about right now.

But he's a little more insistent about reaching for Dodger when the man joins him in bed. As they settle in for the movie, he's a little less settled about how he feels. It seems that as soon as they stop moving, as soon as other physical distractions fall away, Garrett's thoughts begin to circle on red- the rope, the blood. He remembers all the times he's used that kind of red rope, how beautiful it's always looked against pale skin. He remembers every time Barry stripped the bed and every time he put the sheets back on again after an especially powerful laundry cycle. He remembers red on white, and blood in his mouth.

Dodger likes to treat him that way. Lying here, cuddled up next to him with an arm around his shoulders, it thrums in his mind like drum-beats over and over that Dodger likes to treat him in ways nobody else would. And they wouldn't- they never would. But Dodger still says he loves him.

And now there are claws. He's here with someone who likes to hurt him, and Hell still has its hooks in them and may never let go, and he wonders - as the man on the screen downs another whiskey and laments his lost love - what else he might have to lose. (He's been shivering for a few minutes, but hasn't noticed.)
