[Dodger is quiet for a bit, and sets his jaw.]

It was a couple weeks, here. But time is always a little weird between dimensions.

[His brow furrows slightly.]

I'm sure it was a big relief for everyone.

[It was, he almost says, thinking at first of the relief that slowly began sinking into his skin after weeks of no longer looking over his shoulder or wondering.

But what about that first day? What about the way his stomach twisted horribly the first time a text bounced back? Maker, it had been like reliving an old nightmare, and the worst part was not being able to tell Caitlin the truth about why he needed to pull her close and bury his face in her hair. Missing him again? she'd asked kindly, and he never told her yes or no.]

[At first he almost keeps his thoughts to himself. But... in some way, Garrett is bearing his soul. It feels wrong not to return the favor.]

[ wow wow WOW don't call him out like that!! The slightly offended look that flashes over his face is almost hilarious, but it melts quickly into something far softer. ]

It's 4 times now that I've stared down at text messages bounced back from someone I. [ a weird little coughing sound ] Care about.

[He really, really wishes they were indoors. On his pale skin, he can't hide the way that his cheeks warm at Garrett's admission. And oh thank god, they've reached his building.]

Here, hang tight with the rest of the dogs, I'll bring them up in pairs.

[At least he can bring the groceries up at once. And until he teleports Garrett up, he doesn't have to confront what the man said.]

[The dogs are starting to catch on that when they reach this particular spot and Dodger takes their leashes, the teleportation is going to happen. They aren't happy about it. At least the complaining and whining gives Garrett something else to think about for the brief time it takes Dodger to teleport everyone upstairs...

Until he's standing in the apartment with the rest of them, sucking in a breath awkwardly at the feeling he still isn't used to experiencing again.]

Ice cream. [Eloquent!] There are things that need to go in the freezer.

[Not much, though, and the groceries can only get them so far before there once again is nothing between him, Dodger, and the topic at hand.]

[Dodger nods and works on moving everything to the fridge. Despite the fact that he hasn't had things in his fridge for probably years, he's pretty good at moving everything into a logical spot. Trust me, it's a rare skill.

But there's only so many things to move, and eventually they're going to have to talk. And he hesitates with the last bag of chips in his hands before addressing Garrett. Not looking at him.]

I missed you. A lot.

[Somehow (somehow) Garrett ends up with a bottle in his hand at the end. Getting it into the bottle opener magneted to the fridge is a lot easier than looking at Dodger.]

You haven't been acting like it.

[Dodger stuffs the bag into a cabinet and slams the door shut a little harder than he needed to.]

How am I supposed to act?

I don't know.

[There's another bottle on the counter (that he definitely didn't take out just as a way to entice Dodger into staying), so he offers his up.]

Locking me in then getting angry at me for being here sort of mixes the messages. Are you happy to see me?

[he hates how stupid and vulnerable the question sounds.]

[Dodger takes the bottle, but doing so forces him to look at Garrett. There's a sort of vulnerable helplessness behind his frustrated expression. He's in unfamiliar waters, trying not to look like he's drowning.

He sets the bottle on the counter, and grabs Garrett to pull him closer. Not to kiss, just to hug, and bury his face in the man's chest.]

[That expression takes him aback. He's seen it on Dodger's face before, usually in very intense or vulnerable situations, associations that make his chest tight. No power on Earth could stop him from moving in with Dodger's pull, wrapping his arms around Dodger's shoulders and folding the man into an enormous, enveloping embrace.]

Hey.

[He actually has to stop himself from making the kind of soothing, shushing noises he might have made with Cait or Barry, since he knows Dodger doesn't like feeling condescended to. But he does concede to burying his face in Dodger's hair and kissing him, allowing the smallest sounds to escape.]

[Dodger has to take a few deep breaths, trying to stop himself from hyperventilating. His hands start to shake slightly so he tightens his grip, trying to force them to stop.]

I'm tired.

[It's a quiet admission, but speaking makes this a little easier.]

I want time with you. I want this to be easy. But I've got Augustine, and people that want my head, people I need to keep an eye on or keep safe, and it's just... it's just really complicated to have you here.

Augustine? [The way Dodger talks about him sounds so weird. All the time.] What kind of job never lets you actually go home? Don't you have hours?

I take my job home with me.

[There's a pause here, but it's partly just Dodger trying to decide how to explain it.]

He rescued me off the streets. I owe a lot to him. So I do whatever he asks me, whenever he asks. That means keeping track of everyone else he owns, any possible threat, any opportunity to get a leg up. If I put it off until it suits me, people will die.

[defaulthawke]

[That's all very well and good, but-]

So... how does that help with mutant oppression, exactly?

[smokedout]

[He opens his mouth as if he's got a ready answer. And falters. Frustrated, his answer spills out a little more heated than necessary.]

In Nazi Germany, hiding Jewish people was a crime, right? ...Don't answer that, nevermind. My point is, Augustine is working on something to flip the script on humanity. Something highly illegal, and something a lot of gangs in Boston want their hands on. And the way you keep your head in those kinda waters is that you keep your mouth shut. I don't ask questions, I just do what he tells me. And I make sure our side stays on top.

[defaulthawke]

[Garrett remembers a few things- that Dodger was a killer for hire, that he did brutal, terrible things, that he lived and breathed for his boss. That Dodger's attachment to his boss verged well into the unhealthy. He finds himself doubting the nobility of the man's work, but keeps that opinion to himself.]

There are probably better ways to cause change, you know.

[Activism, underground resistance, petitioning those in charge. Manifestos. His expression clouds for a moment with memories.]

How do you like the ring?

There's no "good" way to revolt. Only victors get to write history.

[He just wants to get that point in before the topic changes, but fine, he'll relent. He leans back a bit, now that he's feeling a little better.]

It's nice, I guess.

[Here he is acting like he doesn't care about jewelry. Garrett's definitely seen his small collection of rings, necklaces and earrings.]

And?

[Expectantly. When no answer is forthcoming, Garrett flicks Dodger lightly on the ear, taking advantage of their close contact to get him.]

What about the powerful enchantment that lets you go out in public safely? Any thoughts on that?

[Dodger utters a little 'ow' and reaches up to smack Garrett's shoulder lightly in return.]

I can go out anyway. [His tail flicks.] ...It's nice. But I don't really need it. It's more important for you to use yours.

[defaulthawke]

I know. [He slips the ring off, tucking it into his pocket with a relieved sigh when his horns sprout from his head once more.] That's better.

[Garrett brings a hand to Dodger's face, stroking Dodger's lip with his thumb for a moment before pushing it up just enough to reveal those pointed teeth.]

It's still good to have. And it goes with your collection.

[Dodger stills a little when Garrett touches him, and a shiver runs through him when his lip is pushed up. He just takes it for a moment before tipping his head, opening his mouth and letting his teeth close gently around Garrett's thumb. Just for a moment, before he lets go.]

I'm sure I'll find a use for it.

[There's that look again. Calculating, scanning Garrett's face for any sort of clue as to the other man's intentions.]

[Garrett gives a tiny shiver of his own when Dodger does that thing with his mouth, feeling a kind of warmth bloom between them. He'd want to lean in and kiss him, but holding off seems the sensible choice. There's so much to talk about, or to say, or to... not say. His head is starting to feel a bit odd from drinking, demanding either water or more whiskey to cure it.]

Let's go to the couch. It'd be nice to just...

[Cuddle. Feel someone's arms around him. Hold someone in his own. Soothe the wounded part of his soul that has been aching for touch and care, that still longs for Caitlin- and maybe, still, for Barry.]

[Dodger opens his mouth to say something. What, exactly, he isn't sure. The air is charged with something that he almost wants to bring attention to - he wants to be kissed, he wants more of those soft touches and whatever Garrett's doing to make his chest tighten up.]

Yeah. Sure.

[And yet he doesn't move, waiting for Garrett to break away first.]
