It depends on what's at the store. [ he offers a self-deprecating smile ] If nothing looks especially great, Fereldans are always good at stews.

There's a store a couple blocks from here. I'm not going in. I'll have to leave soon, anyway.

Well someone's gotta watch the dogs. They're not gonna let you bring all seven into a grocery store.

[A pause.]

And, y'know, I have a reputation here. Not everyone cares, but it just takes one person calling the cops.

[Garrett cocks his head, too soused to figure out wtf Dodger's saying.]

Calling the cops for what? Is grocery shopping illegal?

[Dodger stops walking. They're in the parking lot by now, so this is as far as he's willing to walk anyway.]

This is my world, Garrett. People know me here. My photo is up on the news every time I fuck up and I'm pretty fucking easy to spot.

[Garrett stops and looks at Dodger, gears turning in his head as that integrates into what he already knows about the younger man. Violent, bloodthirsty, willing to kill and rape for fun. A picture is coming together, and not one Garrett particularly likes. He doesn't know what to say.]

[He pauses for a moment to light a cigarette. It's been too long, at least ten minutes.]

What are you, some kinda crime expert?

[Garrett doesn't quite succeed at hiding a smug smirk. Instead of heading into the store, though, he just sort of...stands there.]

Should I barter one of the dogs to pay for them?

[Dodger gives him a Look, while pulling his wallet out and forking over a couple hundred dollar bills.]

Here. They'll act suspicious when you use these, just act cool. If any of them don't go through, call me.

[His eyebrows shoot up. What the fuck, Dodger.]

You don't have anything... smaller?

[Alright, well. Cool. This is apparently what's happening. Garrett shakes his head and walks into the store.

And promptly gets absolutely fucking overwhelmed by the array of choices inside because he's literally never been inside a grocery store before. It takes some Google to help him, and some allrecipes.com, and a surprisingly apt WikiHow article called "how to navigate a grocery store on your first visit to Earth without alerting anyone that you're secretly an alien," but he figures it out.

Some time later, he emerges with several bags of food that includes a surprising number of spices and several kinds of chips.]

[That question just got a look, anyway. Dodger isn't planning to justify himself again.

When Garrett gets back, Dodger is gone. The dogs are all tied up to a pole near the exit of the parking lot, blocking cars from coming in while Crusher barks at strangers. He doesn't need to text, though - pretty soon Dodger wanders out of the liquor store nearby, lighting a cigarette before teleporting back to untie the dogs.]

[Whereas most dog owners might immediately react with panic, Garrett watches in bemusement from afar for a couple minutes while Ox gently puts his paw on Crusher's head every time the Beauceron gets too excited. Once he manages to rile Max up as well, only for Blue to very gently close her massive jaws around the Frenchie's head. She really is nothing like other mabari, and it shows in how soft her mouth is and how quickly Max calms down for his beloved giant girlfriend.

Then Dodger comes out, and Garrett strides over as well.]

How long were they tied up there?

[Crusher is, of course, acting as if he's been tied for days. But he's always the most dramatic of the bunch, despite being the second-oldest.

Dodger passes Max and Angel to Garrett, and promptly turns around to go home.]

[Garrett takes the leashes but winces at a sharp stab of pain from his bad shoulder.]

Dodger, can you- I.

[Fuck, he hates asking for help more than anything in the goddamn world.]

My shoulder's being a shit again.

[Dodger pauses, and takes the leashes back. His posture is still tense, but there's a hint of worry behind it.]

Don't push yourself. Here.

[He motions for Garrett to pass over some of the bags.]

Think the mabari could take some of these too?

The bags?

[He looks them over. Yes, of course they could take on the weight, but they aren't wearing any kind of harness to reasonably carry them. Garrett's never had need for one, not since Kirkwall. (Although now he supposes he'll have to start buying supplies for things like that.)]

They can handle the weight, if we can get the bags to stay on.

[He contemplates asking to trade Angel and Max in exchange for Ox. Of the lot, Ox is the only one who actually understands leashes, and the two smallest dogs are just as bad as the others at pulling and trying to bark at cars. The only thing stopping him from asking is the fact that Ox seems to be the only one keeping the other dogs from freaking out. He's a very commanding presence.]

[Dodger lets out a quiet sigh through his nose, and shortens the leashes on all of the dogs before motioning for Garrett to give him the rest of the bags.]

Nevermind- here. Just let me handle it.

[defaulthawke]

[Garrett hands them over gingerly, feeling distinctly awkward about needing the help.]

I'm not used to... not being able to do things.

[When they set off again, Garrett keeps pace with Dodger with his hands in his pockets. The kindness has taken the wind right out of his pissed-off sails, and taken alongside the reality of his current powerlessness it sits oddly in his stomach next to the memories of every time Dodger has ever hurt him. Or helped him.]

Thanks. Asking for help isn't exactly my favorite thing in the world.

[There's a pause.]

I know the feeling.

[He has to maneuver awkwardly to pull his cigarette from his lips so he can ash it onto the sidewalk, and then places it back to keep puffing.]

When we get back, I'll work on sorting out an apartment. Shouldn't take too long - you can sit and watch TV or something. I don't want you to strain that arm.

[Says the man that wrecked Garrett in bed last night.]
