Garrett shakes his head immediately, sitting up with a strange, unsettled kind of alertness.

"I'm not getting rid of Blue," he insists. Blue perks up across the room and pads over to Garrett, shoving her giant head into his hands with a plaintive whine. He strokes her ears protectively. "A mabari wouldn't last two weeks in a stranger's care. Nobody here would know how to handle them."

"Those two are 200 pounds, at least. We're not gonna find a place in inner Boston that can keep two giant dogs, two large dogs and two people without paying a fucking fortune for it."

His expression hardens a bit.

"You need to get rid of the other three, and you need to get rid of Blue. Either her or Ox, pick one."

Something in Garrett's eyes hardens, too. His normally warm brown eyes, flecked with gold, turn stony and cold. He's never had to dig his heels in for Dodger before, but when he does he's immovable.

"No."

"That's all you've got? Just no?"

Dodger bristles, and gets up from the table. Maybe some space will hold back the urge to kick him. And while he's at it, he's lighting another cigarette. His eyes have turned entirely black, without a hint of that pretty green.

"I already told you I'm sick of all these dumb fucks in my apartment. Put them in a shelter, find some friends to sell them off to, I don't care. You can't keep seven dogs."

The black eyes are a little disturbing, but he doesn't back down. (He does sneak Blue a piece of bacon.)

"No shit," he replies acidly, like it's the most painfully obvious thing in the world. "But I'm not getting rid of blue."

"Then get rid of Ox, or find your own damn way to pay for an apartment that'll let you keep them."

Day two of having a boyfriend(?) and this is going fucking fantastic. Dodger feels like smashing something, but he's trying to keep his temper down. It just shows in the twitching of his fingers.

The angrier Dodger gets, the calmer Garrett feels. There's a certain tranquility in being so unshakably certain.

"If I can find a job somehow, I'll help pay."

Dodger crosses his arms and closes his eyes, trying to center himself. Okay, fine. Garrett's called his bluff, so he guesses he can't argue with that.

"Fine. But do it fast, and get rid of the rest of them. I want them gone by the end of next week, alright? Fair compromise."

His eyes are green again when he opens them, and he takes his cigarette out to point it at Blue.

"And put her in a kennel. You can take her back when we find a place."

That sits poorly in his chest when he thinks about Blue in a tiny kennel, confused and wondering where he is. Garrett tightens his grip on her big giant head.

"I'm worried about what will happen when she's on her own. Mabari are war dogs."

It isn't a no- more like an admission.

Dodger softens a bit more, and his shoulders slump.

"We can't keep them both here. Seriously. It's been four days and I'm really getting sick of having to wade through three feet of dogs to get anywhere."

Another pause, while he tries to think.

"...I might know someone that can handle her. I'll see if he wants to babysit."

Garrett picks up another piece of bacon - making sure that Blue sees - and tosses it over to Dodger. Predictably, she follows and sits in front of Dodger, looking adorable with big blue eyes.

"How about we take care of the other three first and see what a difference it makes." He gives Dodger a look just as wide-eyed and entreating as Blue's. "Please?"

Dodger sets his jaw and makes a small sound of annoyance, but he eats half of the strip and hands the rest over to Blue.

"Fine. We'll see."

Blue takes the bacon with extreme gentleness and the utmost decorum, licking her chops after and gently headbutting his thigh for attention. A little smile creeps over Garrett's face at the exchange, especially when Dodger feeds Blue.

"How are people supposed to get jobs around here?" A frown creases his forehead. "Doesn't it involve college or something?"

Dodger shrugs noncommittally, idly scritching Blue's ears while he speaks.

"Wouldn't know, I bounced from job to job when I was a teenager but I usually lasted a day or two. Got my first real job as a favor from the boss. I've been working for Augustine since I got out of the Children of Saturn."

It all sounds so mundane, when he puts it like that.

"Whatever you do, just don't let them know you're not human anymore. No magic, no fancy teeth. They can fire you just for making the customers uncomfortable."

Garrett nods thoughtfully while taking another bite of egg and veggies. Back to the shadows, but in the mage's role this time. It's strange to think about.

"It's weird for something that common to be that hated," he muses. "Anyway, I'll start looking for a job and dog homes soon. Let's take the morons out. Can you show me how the door works?"

"Yeah, sure."

Dodger hesitates a bit before leading Garrett over to the door. It looks entirely normal now, although the knob is brand new. It's a hexagon rather than a smooth circle, too.

"When you turn it, make sure your thumb is pressed into one of the faces. Doesn't matter which. If it can't recognize the thumbprint as mine or yours, it won't open. And it'll send an alert to my phone."

As an example he tries to open it without his fingertips touching the knob, and wiggles it roughly. A moment later his phone buzzes loudly from the bedroom.

Garrett looks on with interest and reaches out to try it for himself.

"Will it tell you when I use the door properly?"

He doesn't necessarily love the idea of his comings and going's all being monitored.

Dodger's phone buzzes again, more quietly. He cocks his head, almost as if he's scrutinizing the way the door opens. The hinges are a bit squeaky after not being used for a year.

"I like knowing when it gets opened. Helps me sleep at night."

Garrett gives Dodger a slight look but soon shrugs. It's not his favorite idea in the world, but on the whole it really isn't that bad.

"You hardly sleep anyway," he teases before turning around to face his ??boyfriend?? with a slight smile. "Thanks for finding a way. I promise to keep you safe with my strong, manly muscles."

Dodger knits his brow, trying not to think very hard about the obvious question there - who's going to protect him from Garrett if something happens?

But he leans up, and presses a kiss to the older man's lips before moving past him to grab the dogs' leashes. Crusher and Stella immediately crowd around him, and Dodger has to shove Crusher away by his chest to stop him from jumping.

The morning passes with little incident: there's the usual morning run (which, as usual, ends with Max in someone's arms and Angel still raring to go) followed by Garrett doing an exercise routine, such as he can, at home. There's some talk about gym memberships and pull-up bars, and Garrett sends a text to Coyote from the toilet about how to get a decent job that isn't totally brainless.

After his shower, Garrett convinces Dodger to stay home for the week. He must have expected you to be out of work for a while, with a beating like that. There's no need to tell the abusive boss what's happening, after all. Why don't they try to have some fun and get used to living together?

(He doesn't really mentally engage with the fact that he's assuming they're going to live together. The feelings are too tangled up, and Garrett's stressed fish-out-of-water mind is unequal to the task.)

Dodger had dug his heels in a bit about lying to Augustine, but there's no denying that he wants to stay home. His feelings about his job are becoming more and more complicated, and ironically it seems easier to stay home and just focus on Garrett. On whatever the fuck is growing between them.

By lunchtime, though, he's already restless and stir crazy. He paces around for a little bit, then puts on the news but just ends up texting instead of paying attention. Then the texts agitate him, and he casts around for something else to do before settling on Garrett.

"When are you getting your nipples pierced?"

A normal opener for a very normal conversation.

Garrett looks up from the sandwiches he's making, lips still wrapped around a beer bottle, and raises an eyebrow questioningly.

Huh. Well... that's a question, isn't it.

"Uh," he pontificates after swallowing his gulp of beer while slowly setting the bottle down on the counter. "I don't remember actually agreeing to."

Dodger slides up behind him while he's speaking, and has to balance on the tips of his toes to rest his head on Garrett's shoulder while his hands slip down to his hips

"I don't remember you having a real problem with it."

Those hands are now traveling under Garrett's shirt to rest on his tits pecs.

"So?"

Garrett slowly pushes the beer bottle and cutting board away so the counter in front of them is clear. If this escalates any more, he suspects they'll need the free space. It also gives him time to think about his answer- which is complicated. In truth, he isn't sure how to feel about the idea of getting his nipples pierced. It's never something he's seriously considered, and Dodger seems much more invested in it than he is.

"The best thing about not having them pierced," he says carefully, mind lingering on Dodger's hands, "Is that you can pierce them whenever you want."
