Dodger hesitates, unsure of exactly how to broach it. For a few moments he's silent, just readjusting himself to cuddle closer.

"He could kill me." He finally mumbles. "But I also... don't want to lose him. I don't want to be stranded again."

More cuddling, until Garrett can lean down and press a kiss into Dodger's hair. He can't exactly judge that sentiment, being stranded as he is now in this world.

"There must be something better you can do with your life, besides letting him beat the shit out of you and getting your face on TV for cocking up his messes."

Dodger sits up then, pushing away from Garrett and going for the cigarettes on his nightstand. He takes a moment to light one, and flicks his fingers as if putting out a match.

"It's not just wagging my tail for my master." His tail curls around him, almost defensively. "Augustine is going to change the world. I want to be able to light a cigarette in public without having a gun pointed at me. I want my friends to have normal jobs, I want kids to wear their wings and horns and fur out for everyone to see without getting sent off to alternative boarding schools. I need him as much as he needs me, maybe more."

Garrett... actually can't find any fault in that. Maybe in Augustine is going to change the world. But then, hasn't he already made the mistake of doubting in change? Of being too timid to go after revolution at any cost?

He falls silent and holds out his fingers to silently ask for a drag of the cigarette.

Dodger bristles a bit, an old habit rearing its head of shrinking away from touch when his shields are down. But he offers the cigarette, and runs his fingers over Garrett's when they pass it off.

"Let's not talk about it, alright? I'm gonna take a shower, we can take the dogs out after breakfast."

More than anything, he's just afraid of Garrett putting more cracks in his already crumbling faith.

Garrett gives Dodger a little smile at that touch, letting their hands linger for a moment before pulling back to smoke. If Dodger wants space from the issue, he can respect that. Maker knows he does the same thing often enough.

"Alright." He takes another long pull and hands the cigarette back. "How do you want your eggs?"

"On a plate." He huffs with laughter, and flashes Garrett a smirk as he takes the cigarette back.

One more drag before he gets up, wandering off to shower. On the way he picks up his phone to check it, and lets out a small noise of annoyance before dropping it again.

He'll be in the shower for a lot longer than usual, mostly so he can process his own thoughts.

Garrett himself takes a minute to use the restroom before letting Dodger in, so he can clean himself up, but then leaves Dodger to his shower. Once clean and dressed, Garrett focuses on breakfast for everyone, starting with the food he's made for the dogs mixed with the garbage bullshit Crusher's been eating. Then, while the bacon is cooking, Garrett spends a few minutes very cautiously poking the contraption at the door. It's a distraction from his burning curiosity about Dodger's phone.

Soon, he has a scramble of vegetables, cheese, and eggs going, with bacon on the side. It isn't the most breathtakingly delicious thing in the world, but it's not bad for someone with such limited experience with modern kitchens.

Dodger teleports into the kitchen once he's cleaned up, having put on boxers but otherwise not bothering to dress himself yet. He's not even fully dry yet. He announces himself by swiping a strip of bacon off of the skillet, and biting off a piece before pressing a kiss to Garrett's cheek.

"Which dogs do you want me to take this time?"

Meanwhile Crusher and Stella are nosing their way in between the men, searching the floor for crumbs and then sniffing hopefully at Dodger and Garrett's hands.

Garrett turns to his lover only to be greeted with lips still wet with sizzling-hot oil. With a yip, he smacks Dodger away with a wooden spoon.

"Ow! Would it kill you to be careful once in a while?"

Dodger yelps in turn when he's hit, and shoves the rest of the strip in his mouth before licking his lips and then his fingers clean.

"Maybe it will. And maybe I should just train you to appreciate the burns."

It's way too soon after sex to handle a training comment, so Garrett smacks him again rather than think about it.

"Start with Fruitcup and the kids."

That smack just gets a grin out of him, and he reaches down to grope Garrett's ass as he walks past him.

"Yes, sir."

And he's sitting on the table to eat the rest of his breakfast, which includes beer with his egg scramble. Dodger tends to eat like he's been starved for days, so he doesn't take much time to demolish it.

And meanwhile, the kids are both putting their heads on the table and making puppy eyes at him. Even some tiny and adorable yips from Crusher.

Garrett gets himself a plate as well, though he goes for coffee rather than alcohol this early, and sits down like a normal person. At some point, when Dodger isn't looking at his beer, Garrett swaps it out for a mug of black coffee.

"No!" He snaps at the dogs, getting their attention to order them away. "Fuck off, no begging!"

Dodger blinks questioningly at the coffee, but he can't say he objects. So he drinks it, chuckling at the dogs being put in their place.

The kids startle slightly before giving him baleful looks, fully understanding that the food is Not For Puppies. It only lasts a moment though, before Crusher starts chewing on Stella's ear and they wander off to playfight a few feet away.

Dodger watches them go before turning his attention back to Garrett. "So... What's your plan for these guys? Gonna adopt them out, or do you really wanna look for a place that'll let you keep them all?"

Garrett watches the dogs playfight with a smile, especially when Max decides to jump Blue and try to start something. It's painfully adorable, a little bubble of happiness that pops when Dodger asks his question.

"I don't know," he admits, shoulders tensing. "It's pretty obvious that Angel needs a new place."

The dog barely relaxes when Dodger is in the apartment and refuses to go within ten feet of him unless Garrett physically hands him the leash. Which, given that she hasn't eaten breakfast yet, is a problem. It's also made going outside a bit of a chore. Still, the thought of parting with any of them is incredibly painful. They're like his family.

Dodger shifts his weight uncomfortably, gulping down the last of his coffee and setting it down.

"If you really want it, I can find you a place where they fit. But it's not gonna be easy and it's not gonna be cheap. It probably won't be anywhere near here."

He pauses, and cocks his head.

"You can keep Ox, Stella and Crusher. The others have to go if you're gonna stay in my place. There's no room for them."

Garrett shakes his head immediately, sitting up with a strange, unsettled kind of alertness.

"I'm not getting rid of Blue," he insists. Blue perks up across the room and pads over to Garrett, shoving her giant head into his hands with a plaintive whine. He strokes her ears protectively. "A mabari wouldn't last two weeks in a stranger's care. Nobody here would know how to handle them."

"Those two are 200 pounds, at least. We're not gonna find a place in inner Boston that can keep two giant dogs, two large dogs and two people without paying a fucking fortune for it."

His expression hardens a bit.

"You need to get rid of the other three, and you need to get rid of Blue. Either her or Ox, pick one."

Something in Garrett's eyes hardens, too. His normally warm brown eyes, flecked with gold, turn stony and cold. He's never had to dig his heels in for Dodger before, but when he does he's immovable.

"No."

"That's all you've got? Just no?"

Dodger bristles, and gets up from the table. Maybe some space will hold back the urge to kick him. And while he's at it, he's lighting another cigarette. His eyes have turned entirely black, without a hint of that pretty green.

"I already told you I'm sick of all these dumb fucks in my apartment. Put them in a shelter, find some friends to sell them off to, I don't care. You can't keep seven dogs."

The black eyes are a little disturbing, but he doesn't back down. (He does sneak Blue a piece of bacon.)

"No shit," he replies acidly, like it's the most painfully obvious thing in the world. "But I'm not getting rid of blue."

"Then get rid of Ox, or find your own damn way to pay for an apartment that'll let you keep them."

Day two of having a boyfriend(?) and this is going fucking fantastic. Dodger feels like smashing something, but he's trying to keep his temper down. It just shows in the twitching of his fingers.

The angrier Dodger gets, the calmer Garrett feels. There's a certain tranquility in being so unshakably certain.

"If I can find a job somehow, I'll help pay."

Dodger crosses his arms and closes his eyes, trying to center himself. Okay, fine. Garrett's called his bluff, so he guesses he can't argue with that.

"Fine. But do it fast, and get rid of the rest of them. I want them gone by the end of next week, alright? Fair compromise."

His eyes are green again when he opens them, and he takes his cigarette out to point it at Blue.

"And put her in a kennel. You can take her back when we find a place."
